The dream of alchemists in the Middle Ages was to turn common metals into precious ones, such as lead into gold, through a mysterious process known as transmutation. Thanks to software developer Playtech, the possibility of turning online gaming into gold is today a reality in the “Alchemist’s Lab”—a 3-reel, single payline slot game with a very special Bonus Round.

Mysticism and secret potions set the theme of this wondrous game. Adorning the slot window are old books, vials filled with coloured solutions, an hourglass and a ring bearing a coded inscription. To left of the reels is a beaker full of blue liquid showing amounts won and to the right is a beaker containing a steaming green elixir that shows the “Current Bet.”

The minimum wager is €1. It can be selected by clicking on the treadle marked “Bet One” beneath the first reel, which will set all of the reels in motion. It is also possible to bet €2 by clicking on the treadle marked “Bet Two” per line under the second reel, or €3 using the “Bet Max” treadle below the third reel.

All of the available reel symbols are displayed on the pages of the alchemist’s book located above and behind the reels. A single Gold Coin on the payline is worth double the wager. Two Gold Coins will pay 25X. Catching three Gold Rings pays 40X, three Blue Liquid Vials pay 75X, three Green Liquid Beakers are worth 100X and three matching Red Liquid Flasks will deliver a line multiplier of 200X. The top prize comes from getting three Gold Coins, worth 3000X when one or two credits are played or €10,000 at Bet Max.

The graphics and audio highlights are minimal when winning combinations come up. A magnifying glass appears to identify the amount won on the Paytable and glassware can be heard breaking in the background.

The special Bonus Round is triggered by catching three ancient books on the payline. A second screen appears to show ten bottles containing a veritable rainbow of mixtures. The player is invited to select three of the bottles to make gold. Clicking on a bottle causes it to disappear as its contents are added to a smelting pot.

Once all three bottles have been chosen, the smelter heats up, gold pours forth onto a mold and a coin is formed. The value of the coin is then displayed and the corresponding amount is added to the player’s winnings. Clinking on “Continue” returns the screen to the main slot game.

For those who enjoy using Autoplay to let the game run by itself, Alchemist’s Lab has access hidden in the pull-down “Tools” menu at the very top right corner of the screen. Clicking on Autoplay pops open a control panel in the lower right corner. Its +/- toggles can be used to set the number of auto spins up to 9,999, or else the desired number can be typed directly into the spin indicator.

Additional Autoplay options can be accessed by clicking the expanded menu arrows on the left edge of the Autoplay control panel. It’s possible to set “stop loss” and “overall win” limits, and there are +/- toggles for adjusting the length of the delay between spins, too.

Also available on the “Tools” pull-down menu are various “Options” such as “Game Settings,” “Audio Settings” and “General Settings.” This is where the player can disable the game sounds, background sounds or dealer voices. It is also possible to adjust the game speed for normal play or fast play.
