During the 18th and 19th centuries, a form of betting called “pedestrianism” became all the rage in Great Britain. Bets were made on how much time was required to walk, run or hop a given distance. In 1872, the popular craze inspired a novel by English author Jules Verne, who wrote about a bet made by Phileas Fogg to circumnavigate the globe. The book was aptly titled, “Around the World in 80 Days.”

Now a video slot game is available online to commemorate that great age of pedestrianism and Verne’s imaginative journey round the Earth. Called “Around the World,” the game features a 5-reel, 20-payline format. The reels are surrounded by famous landmarks, from Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower and the Kremlin to the Sphinx, the Great Wall and the Statue of Liberty.

The game begins with the player selecting an amount for wagering. This is accomplished by using the blue “Stake Up” and “Stake Down” buttons below the middle reel. The amount of the “Stake” per line and “Total Stake” will show in the counter at the lower right corner of the game display. Available wagers range from €0.01 to €2.00. From 1 to 20 paylines can be selected, too, by using the blue “Select Lines” or “Select 20 Lines” buttons below the second reel or by clicking on any of the numbered line indicators that flank the reels. With all 20 lines activated, the maximum possible total stake is €40.

The basic symbols on the reels are travel related modes of transportation: Camels, Elephant, Chinese Junk, Railway, Cruise Ship, Hot Air Balloon and Biplane. Catching three or more of them on an active payline from left to right is worth a line bet multiplier of from 2X to 300X.

There are also two different wild symbols on the reels, substituting for all of the above symbols. When 2, 3, 4 or 5 Around the World Logos align on an active payline, it’s worth a multiplier of 5X, 100X, 1000X or 5000X, respectively. Catching 2, 3, 4 or 5 Phileas Fogg wilds is worth a multiplier of 15X, 200X, 2000X or 10000X, respectively. Catching 2, 3, 4 or 5 Around the World Logos on an active payline is worth a multiplier of 5X, 100X, 1000X or 5000X, respectively. Phileas Fogg has the added attraction of paying a line multiplier bonus of 2X when incorporated in a winning combination.

The Compass Scatter appears on all five reels. Whenever three or more of the scatter symbols come up in any positions, they award a cash prize. The amount of the prize depends on how many of the Compass symbols point north after they spin—from 2X to 16X for three scatters, 10X to 160X for four scatters and 25X to 800X for five scatters.

There is also a second screen Globe Bonus on Around the World. It is triggered by catching three or more Globe symbols on an active payline. An immediate cash reward paid is paid equivalent to 160X for three matched symbols, 480X for four symbols and 1600X for five symbols. The Travel Game Bonus is then initiated and the player has three options: “Collect All” and end the bonus, “Collect Half” and play on, or “Play” and risk the entire Globe Bonus.

If the player chooses to participate in the Travel Game, one of four routes around the world must be selected: Route A for Russia/America, B for China/Japan, C for Egypt/India and D for Africa/Australia. These routes appear on a map of the world with stops along the way marked by Gold Coins. For each Gold Coin collected, a bonus multiplier is awarded up to 4X in total. However, if a sinking ship is reached, all of the Gold Coins and the bonus amount are lost. A successful trip around the world will activate the Travel Game yet again.

Among other functions on Around the World, an Auto Play button is available for selecting from 5 to 25 automatic spins. A Sound on/off toggle can also be found in the Options menu on the Tool Bar at the top of the screen.
