One of the hottest new lines of slot games is the “Reactors” series, which was kicked off in 2006 by OpenBet Technologies with the introduction of “Chain Reactors.” The category has since blossomed into an array of manic symbol-matching cascade games from Royal Reactors, Bingo Reactors and Chain Reactors Super Trail to totally new formats such as Supercubes and now “Atomic Fruit.”

The Atomic Fruit game display has little in common with a traditional slot window. There are no reels. Instead, there are groups of four spherical “atoms” forming 16 “pods” in a 4x4 matrix. Icons appear in each atom, making 64 symbol positions in all. The pods line up in ten payline configurations—four horizontal, four vertical and two diagonal. In order to get a winning combination, one or more icons in each of the four pods on a payline must match. The total number of winning possibilities is a whopping 2,560.

The icons appearing in the atoms are reminiscent of the symbols found on classic slot games—Grapes, Watermelons, Bells, Bars and the like. Payout values increase depending upon the payout value of the symbol and the number of matching symbols on the payline. Also, a symbol can contribute to multiple wins. For example, the lowest paying icon, the Cherries, can pay a line multiplier from 1X to 256X. Catching four or more Oranges in a row is worth 2X to 512X, while consecutive Blue Sevens are worth from 20X to 5120X.

The top paying icon in the matrix is the Goofy King, which resembles a purple ball with bug eyes, buck teeth and a crown. It is obviously a cousin of the balls found in other Reactors-type games and, when aligned properly, it awards payouts from 40X to and astounding 10240X. However, that’s still not the top payout. A special Yellow Seven Jackpot icon appears on rare occasion, and when four of them fit into a winning configuration, a progressive jackpot is paid.

To sweeten the pot even more, the pods are colour-coded—Red, Blue and Green. Whenever seven or more pods of the same colour are connected horizontally and/or vertically, a “Reaction” occurs. The pods will explode leaving gaps to be filled by new cascading pods. Each Reaction adds a multiplier of 1X for each subsequent winning payline award. There is no limit on the number of Reactions or multipliers possible, so a single “spin” could conceivably go on forever.

The value of each Reaction depends on the number pods involved. For seven pods exploding, the award is 3X. For eight it is 5X, and for nine it is 7X. The multipliers continue to increase all the way up to 1000X for exploding all 16 pods at once. Payouts are in multiples of the corresponding line stakes, with the exception of the progressive jackpot.

The control panel for Atomic Fruit is found on the right side of the screen. A window that shows “Winnings” is located at the top, and immediately below it on the left is a button to access the “Paytable” information. Immediately below that is the “Stake/Line” indicators with its +/- toggles for choosing the amount to wager per payline. Available denominations range from €0.01 up to €25, making the maximum total bet possible €250. An indicator for “Total Stake” can be seen to the right of the toggles.

To begin the game, the player sets the wager and then clicks on the bright green “Play” button at the bottom right of the screen to set the pods in motion. Lively xylophone movement accompanies the random swirling of the pods, looking much like some kind of wild atomic fusion experiment. The pods all come to a halt at the end of a drum roll. Those icons involved in winning combinations will light up and link, while the others will go dark.

A list of each winning line and its payout will scroll in the Winnings window, and the total amount won will show in the “Total Win” indicator just below. If a Reaction occurs, that will also display in the Winnings window, along with the multiplier value of the next cascade of pods.

For those who enjoy using Autoplay, a selector can be found on the control panel to the left of the Play button, which turns into a “Stop” button whenever Autoplay is activated. Use the +/- toggles to choose up to 25 automated spins.
