Back in the days of privateering on the high seas, life was simple. Get a commission from the government to attack the merchant vessels of a hostile nation, plunder at will and carry off riches. Well, Playtech has commissioned slot player to do just that in its retro-version Captain’s Treasure slot game.

The format of Captain’s Treasure could not be simpler. It’s a 5-reel game with nine paylines that pay in either direction, left to right or right to left, which makes identifying winning combinations ultra easy. What’s more, there are no second screen bonus features or free spin rounds—only the action resulting from “what you spin is what you get.” Nothing could be simpler.

Available credit denominations range from €0.01 to €5.00. It is possible to play from 1 to 9 paylines for a maximum wager of €45. To start the game, simply click “Spin.” Winnings are displayed in the “Win” section below the fifth reel, and the player’s current balance shows in the screen’s lower left-hand corner.

The standard playing card symbols so common on Playtech slots are the basic symbols here, Nines through Aces. Collecting three or more matches on an active payline pays a line bet multiplier of anywhere from 5X to 500X. Other symbols requiring as few as two matches are the Wheel, Anchor and Treasure Map. They pay from 3X to 2500X for winning alignments. And the Crossed Cutlasses symbol affords the highest payouts, awarding 2X, 10X, 100X, 500X or 5000X for catching 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, respectively.

The Treasure Chest is the scatter symbol in this game. Whenever 2, 3, 4 or 5 of them appear anywhere on the reels, the total wager is multiplied by 1X, 5X, 10X or 100X, respectively. The Wild symbol on the Captain’s Treasure reels is the Captain himself. He substitutes for all symbols except the Treasure Chest scatter. The Captain is the only reel symbol that animates in a winning combination, flashing the ‘thumb’s up” signal whenever a payout is made with his help.

For those who like to use the Autoplay mode and allow the game to spin unaided, Captain’s Treasure has two unique aspects. First, there is no toggle on the main screen to activate this feature. Instead, it is hidden and can only be accessed through the pull-down “Tools” menu at the very top of the screen. Second, rather than using the +/- toggles next to the spins indicator, which can be time consuming, the number of auto spins desired can be typed directly into the counter—up to 9,999 spins maximum.

The Captain’s Treasure video slot is linked into Playtech’s progressive Dollar Ball Jackpot. This lotto-type side game can be accessed by using a toggle at the upper right corner of the screen. Then, five numbers from 1 to 49 can be selected and as the main slot game is played, five winning numbers will be drawn at random. Getting 1, 2 or 3 numbers correct will pay 1X, 2X or 25X, based on the total wager made. Catching four numbers pays 1% of the progressive jackpot, while getting all five numbers awards the grand prize.

Participation in this feature begins by using the “Enable” toggle in the upper right corner of the screen. It is available, of course, only in the “Real Money” mode, not during free play. As long as Dollar Ball is activated, the additional Jackpot wager will be made automatically every time the player bets in the main slot game. Turning off the Dollar Ball side bet is accomplished by clicking on “Disable.” All Dollar Ball winnings are deposited directly into the player’s current Balance along with any cash awards from the main game.
