The very first Marvel Comic featuring the supernatural motorcyclist named Ghost Rider appeared in 1972. There have been some modifications to the character over the years, but the enduring version of the Rider’s tale evolved from Johnny Blaze, a stunt performer for a traveling circus, who supposedly sold his soul to Satan to save his stepfather from cancer.

Actually, the demon that Blaze bargained with was Mephisto and an interruption in making their “pact,” resulted in the Rider’s soul being only half bound to hell, so part of him is fused to an evil entity called Zarathos. Special powers imbued by Zarathos include superhuman strength and durability, plus the ability to project flames and travel over any surface as well as between dimensions. The Rider’s flesh is consumed by ethereal fire as he wields an enchanted Hellfire Chain and a shotgun in his fight for salvation and to escape his fate.

In 2007, Columbia Pictures brought out “Ghost Rider” as a full-length motion picture starring Nicolas Cage. The actor reprised the role in the 2011 sequel entitled “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.” By that time, Cryptologic had already developed the comic book antihero into a five-reel, 25-payline online slot game bearing the character’s name. To date, the company’s Ghost Rider slots are the only version available on the Internet.

The Cryptologic game features credit denominations ranging from €0.01 to €5, with wagering of one credit per line up to a maximum bet of €250. The value of each credit can be adjusted by clicking on the up-down arrows to left of the Bet window under the fifth reel. To start the game, click “Spin.” Winnings show in the “Paid” display at the bottom of the screen, while the current balance appears just to the left and the Total Bet to the right. Using the Autoplay feature allows effortless repetition of bets.

In line with the supernatural theme of the comic book series, winning combinations of symbols on the reels include matching three or more Amulets, Books of Spells, Crystals, Iron Gloves, Hellfire Chains or Flaming Motorcycles. Higher payouts are awarded for lining up Zarathos, Gates of Hell, Mephisto or Johnny Blaze symbols on an active payline. Ghost Rider is wild on all reels, substituting for any symbol except the Ghost Rider Logo scatter emblem.

The very highest line payout is awarded for five consecutive Ghost Rider symbols, worth 10,000 times the line bet. Other payouts range from 5X to 2,500X multipliers. There are also three randomly awarded progressive jackpots—the Marvel Hero Jackpot starting at €5,000, the Super Hero Jackpot from €500 and the Hero Jackpot beginning at €50. Because of the way Marvel Jackpots are set up, betting bigger improves the odds of winning one of the three jackpots.

Getting five Logo scatter symbols pays 100 times the total bet, while 4, 3 or 2 Logos award 20X, 5X and 2X, respectively. The special Ghost Rider Feature is activated by the appearance of three or more Scattered Logos on any of the reels. The regular slots game is halted as the scene shifts to a burning cityscape, where Ghost Rider must save hostages from objects on fire in the animated bonus stage. The player gets three rescue attempts, each of which can initiate a bonus worth up to 100 times the triggering bet.

Cryptologic is known for its excellent animation and sound effects. These are evident not only in the special Ghost Rider Feature, but also in the reel symbols, which spring into action and almost seem to pop out of the screen when part of a winning line wager.
