Filmed at the BBC Television Centre and first aired on the ITV network in June 2007, “Golden Balls” was a British daytime television game show presented by Jasper Carrott. It ran through December 2009, and then repeats of the show were broadcast on Challenge, starting in January 2013. In the meantime, Golden Balls Ltd. licensed their name to Endemol for the game show, merchandise and development of online gaming applications.

First on the Internet was the arcade game developed by Endemol called “Golden Balls” and next came a “Golden Balls Scratch” version. Now there is also a spinning reels game—“Golden Balls Slot”—featuring 5 reels and 20 paylines. In terms of motif, the slot version should look quite familiar, using the same graphics approach as the interactive arcade game and scratch card. The reels of Golden Balls spin within a brightly lit, neon-like arch with the Golden Balls Logo on top. Most of the controls run across the bottom of the screen.

The “Coin Size” selector is located directly below the “Bet” summary under the first reel. Using the up/down arrows that flank the counter, the amount to be wagered can be adjusted between £0.01 and £1.00 per line. From 1 to 20 lines may be selected by using the “Bet One” button below reels 3 and 4 or else by clicking directly on the numbered line indicators that flank reels 1 and 5. Clicking on “Max Bet” is yet another way to choose all 20 lines, making £20 the maximum possible “Total Stake.”

The basic icons appearing on the reels are familiar fruit machine icons—Cherries, Watermelon, Single Bar and Green Sevens. These pay line multipliers from 5X to 150X whenever three or more matches appear on an active payline from left to right. Greater rewards are paid for catching three or more symbols for standard playing cards. Three or more Jacks or Queens pay from 20X to 300X, while two or more Kings or Aces pay line multipliers from 2X to 500X. Catching 2, 3, 4 or 5 “Pound Signs” is worth 2X, 50X, 250X or 1000X, respectively.

The wild symbol on the Golden Balls Slot is the Golden Balls Logo. It substitutes for any of the above symbols. Catching 2, 3, 4 or 5 Logos is worth 10X, 100X, 1000X or 10000X, respectively. Note that when one or more wild Logos substitute in a win, only the highest win is paid. The “Steal” icon is the game’s scatter symbol. It pays a Total Stake multiplier of 5X, 25X or 100X whenever 3, 4 or 5 Steal scatters appear in any positions on the reels.

Any time three or more “Bonus Golden Ball” icons appear on an active pay line, the Golden Balls Bonus is initiated. It consists of three second screen games. For thee Bonus balls, the Bin or Win game; for four Bonus balls, the Killer Spinner; and for five Bonus balls, the Split or Steal Progressive Jackpots, which is played on two levels—The Jackpot Reels and Split or Steal.

Any time three or more “Golden Bank Bonus” symbols on any payline, the Golden Bank Bonus game is activated. This game can last up to six rounds. In each round, the player is presented with three Golden Balls to choose from, each of which contains a hidden value. The player wins whatever is inside the chosen ball and advances to the next round. However, if the selection turns out to be a “Killer Ball,” the game ends. All wins are multiplied by the number of paylines the three triggering symbols appeared on.
