One of the most enduring fictional characters of all time is “King Kong,” a colossal gorilla conceived and created by U.S. filmmaker Merian C. Cooper for his 1933 movie spectacle of the same name starring Fay Wray. The story of Kong’s capture on Skull Island, his transport to New York for display as the “Eight Wonder of the World,” and his eventual escape and death has thrilled cinema audiences for generations.

So compelling is this tale that King Kong was remade for the big screen in 1976 with Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lane. The special effects used in the original version were greatly improved of course, and by 2005, when Universal Pictures brought out the third and latest edition of the King Kong saga, computer animated graphics all but stole the show from an A-list cast featuring Naomi Watts, Adrien Brody, Jack Black and Thomas Kretschmann.

In its international edition, Universal’s epic was titled “Kong: The 8th Wonder of the World.” That’s also the name software developer Playtech picked up for their five-reel, 20-payline online slot game released in March of 2011. In fact, the title is just the first of many ways the game ties directly into the movie.

During the software loading process, before the game appears on the computer screen, scenes from the actual motion picture are shown, almost like a theatrical trailer. Clicking on “Skip Intro” leads straight to the slots action, but the footage is so intriguing that few will be over-anxious to ignore it.

Once the reels appear, lilting jazz music sets the mood for some of Playtech’s very best audio-video effects. Four of the reel symbols are none other than Watts, Brody, Black and Kretschmann in their acting roles, and they transition into still scenes from the film whenever their winning combinations come up. Five other reel symbols are the theatre marquee-lit card symbols, Tens through Aces.

Of course, the Kong symbol is wild, substituting for all symbols except the Logo scatter emblem. The highest payout is for five wild Kongs on an active payline, worth 3,000 times the line bet. Other line payouts range from 2X to 1,000X. Credit denominations range from €0.01 to €5, with wagering of one credit per line on any number of paylines up to 20 for a maximum bet of €100. The credit value can be adjusted by clicking on the +/- buttons beneath the second reel.

To start the game, click “Spin.” The reels can be paused instantly by clicking “Stop.” Winnings show in the “Win” display under the third reel, while the current Balance appears in the lower left corner of the screen. Using Autoplay allows up to 50 respins at the same bet level.

A unique aspect of Kong slots is the way in which two separate game modes come into play: Jungle Mode and Big City Mode. In Jungle mode, scatter bonuses of 5X, 10X, or 100X the total bet are paid when 3, 4 or 5 Logos appear, activating the Skull Island Bonus in which capturing Kong or three animals of the same kind results in cash prizes. In Big City mode, the bonus game features Kong atop a City Tower swatting down three airplanes to reveal awards. The slot format switches from one mode to the other upon exiting any Bonus round.

In both modes, three or more Wild Kong symbols initiate three free spins. In Jungle Mode, every Kong that appears freezes in place for the remainder of the free spins. In Big City Mode, expanded Kong symbols take up two or three of the reels each spin. Kong remains wild and substitutes for all symbols except the Logo. Bonus features cannot be re-triggered during the free spins.
