According to legends circulated in the 19th century, Lemuria was supposedly a “lost land” that may have been located in between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Although its existence has since been disproven by science, it captured the public’s imagination as a place where occult arts were practiced and it has survived in folklore, becoming a setting for fantasy novels, much like Narnia or Atlantis.

Now, software developer Microgaming has brought the secret sorcery of this mysterious land to online casinos in the form of a 5-reel, 243-payline slot game fully entitled “The Forgotten Land of Lemuria.” It uses the newly adopted “All Pay” video format with no pre-defined paylines; no matter where on the reels symbols show up, matches of three or more from left to right always form a winning combination.

To begin the game, a coin denomination must be selected by using the +/- toggles beneath the first reel. Possible values range from €0.01 to €0.50, and the minimum wager is 25X. Beneath the second reel, the player may also choose to wager from 1 to 10 coins, thus making the maximum bet €125 in total.

Basic reel symbols on Land of Lemuria are the standard cards, Nines through Aces, paying from 5X to 250X for three or more matches. Higher awards are paid for matching Flowers, Skulls, Crystals and Elements, from 20X to 1500X. The Lemuria Logo is wild and substitutes for any of the above symbols. When one or more Logos are used as wilds, they pay only the highest win.

Another symbol on the reels is the Sorceress’s Eye scatter. Whenever 3, 4 or 5 such symbols appear on the reels in any positions, the payout is worth 25X, 150X or 500X, respectively. Combinations of three or more Sorceress’s Eye scatters also trigger the game’s “Treasure Vault Feature” and the opportunity to win additional prizes.

As the bonus begins, the screen appears to shake as the reels disappear and a secondary bonus screen is revealed, with the Sorceress rising from the depths of the forgotten land. Surrounding her are wisps of magical energy and in the background are waterfalls, palm trees in silhouette and the towers of her castle shrouded by the mists. A circular “halo” of watery vapours appears around her, containing ten colourful orbs floating in the air.

The player is invited to begin clicking on the orbs to reveal hidden cash prizes. When the cursor is passed over each one, it emits a burst of energy and glows. The player may select orbs and win prizes until one reveals the exit symbol and the game moves on to the next “vault” or level, where ten orbs are suspended in a wreathe of earthy foliage. Again, the player selects orbs and wins prizes till the exit symbol appears.

At the third level, the ten orbs are carried on a circle of fire. Prize awards are worth even higher values, but when the exit symbol appears the bonus round ends. All accumulated cash awards are added to the score achieved on the triggering spin, the sound of thunder can be heard and the Sorceress slips back into the mists.

Land of Lemuria has an Auto Play feature in “Expert” mode for setting up to 500 spins. It also has several special “Options” available in a pop-up menu. Among those are “QuickSpin,” audio “Sounds” on/off, graphic “High Quality Effects” on/off, and display options for “Coins” or “Credits.” Soothing music and the sound of waves provide a tranquil atmosphere during play, and the reel symbols animate when they appear in winning combinations.
