The legend of King Midas is one of the most intriguing in all of Greek mythology. It’s the story of a member of the royal house of Phrygia, who in the second millennium BCE was said to have received the “golden touch” from the god Dionysus. Instead of being a blessing, however, it ended up a curse. Everything the king touched turned into gold, including food and drink, and he could no longer come into contact with his wife or daughter.

In developing the slot game Midas Millions, software maker Ash Gaming has given the myth a much less tragic and even somewhat comic twist. As the game’s introduction opens, players are welcomed to the court of King “Bling” Midas. He’s a lanky old-timer with a gold crown on his head, wearing blue jeans, sneakers and a Las Vegas T-shirt. Surrounding him are all sorts of items, from champagne, hamburgers and fruit on gold pedestals to casino chips, a gold music player with headphones, a video game controller, and much more. This King Midas is obviously enjoying his power to make players rich.

The “reels” for Midas Millions are not really reels at all. The game is played on a matrix of 17 symbol twirling positions stacked in five unequal columns. The first, third and fifth columns contain three hexagonal positions in a vertical array, but the second and fourth reels have four such position. For that reason, there are no “rows” of symbols, either. Instead, the symbols pay out when they form “groups” of matching symbols, making an incredible 118,700 ways to win in total.

The basic game symbols are the standard face cards, Tens through Aces, which pay multipliers of the total stake from 0.1X to 4X when four or more match by forming a group of adjacent symbols. Higher awards can be won by matching four or more Grapes, Champagne Bottles, Watches, Automobiles or Private Planes, from 1X to 1000X. The Midas Millions Logo is the wild symbol in this game. It substitutes for all symbols except the Free Spins scatter, but it can only substitute to form one group—always the highest paying one.

When two or more Midas Millions Logos appear on the same diagonal row, King Midas will “connect” them by touching the symbols that separate them and turning them into Gold Wilds. Any group that contains one or more Gold Wilds will all turn gold and the winnings will be doubled. Two connecting Logos next to each other (with no symbols in-between) will not be turned gold, as there are no symbols for King Midas to touch. Only Midas touching a symbol can make it turn gold.

Another symbol on the game matrix is the Super Wild, which appears only on the middle column. It does not connect with other wilds, but it causes King Midas to reach out and touch up to six adjacent symbols to form a group that turns gold and pays double. Catching 12+ of the same symbol that turn gold in a group wins the Jackpot worth one million units.

One special feature of Midas Millions is its Free Spins Bonus. Whenever Free Spins scatter symbols appear on reels 1, 3 and 5, the bonus is initiated worth 10 free spins. The winnings in these are based on using the same stake that had last been used in the normal game. The Free Spins Bonus uses a different set of symbols so that it is not possible to re-trigger free spins or get connecting wilds or the Super Wild. However, after each free spin King Midas may randomly select up to two symbols to change to a Locked Wild. These symbols remain in position as wild symbols for the remaining free spins. Note that Locked Wild symbols cannot turn to gold and do not pay double.

If at the end of the Free Spins Bonus the total amount won is less than 10 times the original stake, King Midas will award an extra mystery prize to add to the winnings, which could be worth up to 20 times the wager. The game stake on Midas Millions can be adjusted by using the +/- toggles at the bottom of the display from €0.10 to €500. There is an a Autoplay button for choosing from 5 to 25 automatic spins as well as an option for “infinite” spins until the Free Spins Bonus is won. There is also a “Change Music” button that allows the player to change the background tune or select “None.”
