Founded in 1519 by Spanish conquistador Pedro Arias Dávila, Panama City has a long history preceding the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914. However, it has only been since 1989, when martial law was lifted and the country’s infamous dictator General Manuel Noriega was disposed, that the city has come into its own as a modern travel destination.

Today, Panama City has a population of 880,691, making it the largest city in the Republic of Panama. It is the nation’s capital, serving not only as the political and administrative center of the country but also as a hub for international banking and commerce. International Living magazine has ranked it among the top five places for retirement in the world, and in 2003 it was jointly named the American Capital of Culture along with Curitiba, Brazil.

The area just east of the city’s Pacific entrance of the canal—referred to as the Amador Causeway—is currently under development as a tourist center and nightlife destination. In the meantime, most of Panama City’s casinos are housed in major resort hotels, clustered in the districts between the downtown area and the University of Panama.

Then, on the north side of the city is the Central Park Hotel and Golden Lion Casino, an international hotel with 325 rooms in addition to its avant-garde décor, personalized services, casino, spa and 24-hour security.
