Rotterdam is the Netherlands’ second largest city, with a metro population of just over 1.2 million. It is also one of the busiest seaports in the world, situated near the mouth of the Nieuwe Maas, a channel within a delta where two rivers empty into the North Sea. The waters of the Meuse and Rhine provide excellent access to the hinterlands of continental Europe, reaching upstream all the way to Basel, Switzerland and into France.

First settled in the 10th century, Rotterdam was plagued by flooding and did not gain its stature as a transshipment centre until after a series of dams, dikes and canals were constructed between 1260 and 1350. In 1602, the port became home to the Dutch East India Company, widely recognised as the world’s first multinational shipping merchant.

Today, Rotterdam is divided into northern and southern sections by the Nieuwe Maas, connected by a series of bridges, as well as subway and railway tunnels. The city centre, known as Centrum, is on the northern bank of the Nieuwe Maas, surrounded by 14 sub-municipalities that grew out of the amalgamation of numerous towns. Although a new business centre, Kop van Zuid, was built on the south bank in the 1990s, most of the big hotels, brand-name shops and fine dining restaurants are clustered near Central Station, City Hall and Hofplein Square—the downtown’s so-called “Cool District.’

Right near the heart of the city in the Plaza Complex next door to the Manhattan Hotel Rotterdam on Weena Boulevard is the city’s branch of Holland Casino. It is operated directly by the government’s gaming monopoly, and with 30,000 square feet of gaming space, 734 gaming machines and 50 table games, it is easily the city’s #1 place to play. Games include American Roulette, Blackjack, Caribbean Stud Poker, French Roulette, Poker, Punto Banco, Roulette and Sic Bo. Hours of operation are from 1:30pm to 3am daily, except 31 December. Also on the premises are the Balcony Restaurant and one bar.

Another downtown property operated by the Dutch monopoly is the Fair Play Casino on Coolsingel Boulevard. It features 166 gaming machines, with action available on Monday through Thursday from 9am till midnight, on Fridays and Saturdays from 9am until 1am, and on Sundays from 10am to midnight.

Just around the corner on Keerweer Lane is the Merkur Casino – Rotterdam. It is owned and operated by the German-based Merkur Gaming Group, one of Europe’s leading suppliers of video lottery terminals, AWP and casino machines. This branch keeps the same hours as the Fair Play Casino and likewise features only electronic gaming machines, no live dealer tables.

Joining all these gaming venues in the Cool District is another lively competitor called Jack’s Casino – Rotterdam Centrum. It offers a wide range of games, smoking cabins for smokers, a parking garage and an agenda of events ranging from cocktail parties to holiday specials. Snacks and drinks are provided to players for free during opening hours, which run from 9am till midnight on Sunday through Thursday and 9am to 1am on Fridays and Saturdays. All Jack’s Casino venues in Holland are owned and operated under license by JVH Gaming & Entertainment Group, who have been setting up properties around the Netherlands since 2007. In fact, they have already established a second foothold in Rotterdam called Jack’s Casino – Rotterdam Zuid. Located on Krabbendijkehof Street in the sub-municipality of Charlois, it is the only major gaming venue south of the Nieuwe Maas.

Jack’s Casino - Rotterdam Zuid offers players an informal atmosphere where they can encounter various commercial games of chance, including roulette, poker and well-known fruit machines. The gaming space is open from 9am daily and operates until midnight on Sunday through Thursday and 1am on Fridays and Saturdays.
