Created for Marvel Comics by writer-editor Stan Lee and writer-artist Steve Ditko, Spider-Man has been rated one of the top three fictional comic book superheroes of all time. The character first made his appearance in 1962 as teenager Peter Parker, a somewhat nerdy orphan, is bit by a radioactive spider and acquires superhuman powers.

Among the many special attributes Parker gains are the agility and proportionate strength of an arachnid, the ability to adhere to walls and ceilings, a “spider sense” to react quickly to danger, and a capacity for shooting strands of web so that he can virtually “fly” through building-lined streets. The teen’s self-obsessions with “rejection, inadequacy and loneliness” made him easy for young readers to relate to, too.

In 2000, Columbia Pictures and Marvel Enterprises released “Spider-Man” as a feature film starring Kirsten Dunst as love interest Mary Jane Watson and Tobey Maguire as Parker, roles which they reprised in 2004’s “Spider-Man 2.” Those successes were followed by “Spider-Man 3” in 2007 and then a hit Broadway musical, “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” in 2010. Yet another addition to the movie series came out in 2012, “The Amazing Spider-Man.” This time Andrew Garfield was cast in the lead as Parker.

In conjunction with the third installment made for cinemas, Cryptologic introduced the inaugural Spider-Man slots to the Internet in 2007. The software developer went all out with innovations, giving the five-reel, 25-payline game three different bonus features, including a multi-stage bonus game with highly impressive animation.

Credit denominations on the Spider-Man slots range from €0.01 to €5, with wagering of one credit per line up to a maximum bet of €250. The value of each credit can be adjusted by clicking on the up-down arrows next to the Bet window beneath the fifth reel. To start the game, click “Spin.” Winnings appear in the “Paid” display at the very bottom of the screen, with the current balance show immediately to the left and the Total Bet to the right. The Autoplay feature can be enabled for effortless repetition of bets.

Winning combinations of symbols on the reels start with the traditional card symbols—Nines through Aces—and move up to symbols for Newspapers, Cameras, Mary Jane and the evil character “Venom.” Matching three or more of the inanimate symbols wins anywhere from 5 to 500 times the line bet, while Mary Jane pays 3X to 1,000X for 2~5 matches and Venom earns 4X to 5,000X on an active payline. Spider-Man is wild on reels two and four only, substituting for any symbol except the Spider-Man Logo scatter emblem.

Although the highest line payout possible is awarded for the five Venom symbols, there are also three randomly awarded progressive jackpots—the Marvel Hero Jackpot starting at €5,000, the Super Hero Jackpot from €500 and the Hero Jackpot beginning at €50. The Marvel Jackpots function so that the more a player bets the more likely the odds are of winning one of the three jackpots.

The appearance of five Scattered Logos pays 100 times the total bet, while 4, 3 or 2 Logos award 15X, 4X and 2X, respectively. The Spider-Man Feature is activated when three or more Scattered Logos appear left to right. The player then gets to choose between taking 15 Free Spins with all prizes paying double or else going for a shot at the Venom Bonus.

In the Free Spins mode, extra wild symbols are added to reels two and four, but no additional bonuses can be triggered during the free games. In the Venom Bonus multi-stage mode, a great 3D animation of Spider-Man appears swinging through the city, searching for Venom who has kidnapped Mary Jane. The player selects which he should go. Choices lead to fight scenes or crime scenes with varying levels of bonus payouts and finding Venom awarding the biggest prize.

The Spiderweb Feature occurs when wilds appear on both reels two and four. All resulting wins are paid, and then as all other symbols are held in place, the middle reel becomes wild and completing several potential five-of-a-kind combinations. Any additional wins are paid at this time.
