In 1966, Italian director Sergio Leone delivered a “Spaghetti Western” to the big screen that has since become a classic—“The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.” Starring Clint Eastwood as the “Good,” Lee Van Cleef as the “Bad” and Eli Wallach as the “Ugly,” the epic is famous not only for its acting but also for its timeless musical score composed by Ennio Morricone. The storyline follows the three gunslingers competing to find a fortune in buried Confederate gold, with the violence of gunfights, hangings, American Civil War battles and prison camps as a backdrop.

The rights to develop the famous film as an online slot were picked up by software developer Electracade for release in early 2012. The game, which features a 5-reel, 20-payline format with multiple bonus features, can now be found on Bet365, BetVictor, William Hill and many other major gaming web sites.

The eight basic symbols that appear on The Good, the Bad and the Ugly reels are familiar items from the movie—Canteen, Cannon, Grave Marker, Pistol, Wanted Poster, Confederate Flag, American Flag and Sack of Gold. They award line bet multipliers ranging from 2X to 2000X for catching three or more matches on an active payline. The Galloping Horse is the game’s wild icon, substituting for any of the above eight symbols. When five Galloping Horses appear on an active payline, the payout is a 10000X multiplier of the line bet.

To begin the game, the player must select an amount to wager per line. This can be accomplished by using the up/down indicators next to the “Bet/Line” indicator at the lower left corner of the display. Available values run from a minimum of €0.10 to a limit of €25.00.

Similarly, the number of lines to be played can be set from 1 to 20 by using the up/down indicators next to the “Lines” indicator beneath the first reel. Alternatively, clicking on the line number identifiers that flank the first and fifth reels will also set the number of lines to be played.

There is no “Bet Max” button on The Good, the Bad and the Ugly slots, but wagering the full €25 per line on all 20 lines yields a maximum stake of €500. Whatever amount is wagered will show in the “Stake” window beneath the second reel. There is a “Total Paid” window below reel three. Indicators for Stake and Paid also appear below the “Balance” counter at the top right of the screen.

Auto Spin can be activated by clicking on the corresponding button below the fourth reel. There are options for 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 spins. The same button is used to stop the Auto Spin function.

One of the two special bonus features on The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is “Tuco’s Target Range.” It is triggered whenever the Tuco’s Logo appears on reels one and five in any position. Wild horses will race across the reels and reveal a secondary screen with five wooden targets. The player may shoot at any three of the targets to reveal multipliers, which are added together and applied to the entire stake to determine the value of the prize won.

The second special feature is the “Graveyard Showdown.” It is triggered by catching the “Good” symbol on reel three, the “Bad” symbol on reel four and the “Ugly” symbol on reel five on the same spin in any position. The player the has the opportunity to shoot any two of the three gunslingers and a “Last Man Standing” bonus will be paid based on the cash reward accumulated during prior spins. Each time one of the three characters appears on the reels during normal slot mode, a cash increment is added to the reward for that character and displayed at the upper right corner of the display.

One other noteworthy aspect of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly slots is the audio. Samplings from Morricone’s memorable movie theme abound, as do such sound effects as horses, the wind, train whistles, gun shots and the never-ending wind whipping across the plains. Graphics are notable, too, with animation for winning combinations.
