In 2009, Betsoft Gaming introduced a number of new 3D video bonus slots online as part of their Slots-3 Series. Among them was “The Slotfather,” a 5-reel, 30-payline game with an organised crime theme and the offer of “a jackpot you can’t refuse.” It is modeled loosely (very loosely) on the 1972 hit movie, “The Godfather,” directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino and James Caan.

The reels of The Slotfather spin within carved wooden frames with most of the key controls located at the bottom of the screen. The coin denomination for the game can be selected by clicking directly on the “Choose Coin Bet” indicator in the lower left corner, from €0.01 to €1.00. Directly below the middle three reels are three hats marked “Bet Per Line,” “Select Lines” and “Max Bet.” By clicking directly on the hats, use them to set the total Stake from 1 to 5 coins per line on 1~30 paylines up to a maximum of €150.

Once the Stake has been set, clicking on “Spin” in the lower right corner above the Machine Gun will set the reels in motion. Moody violin music accompanies the spins, and for most of the winning combinations, there is animation along with sound effects, too.

The symbols displayed on The Slotfather are representative of underworld activities. They include Newspapers, Cigars, Maps of Italy, Pasta Dishes, Machine Guns, Pinky Rings and Bottles of Wine. These symbols pay line multipliers from 20X to 160X whenever three or more match up on an active payline. Higher rewards can be gained by aligning two or more symbols for Black Sedans, Valises full of money, Sammy Quickfingers or Frankie da Fixer, from 15X to 200X.

There are no wild symbols on The Slotfather, but bonuses are abundant. For example, when 3, 4 or 5 Fat Tony symbols appear anywhere on an active payline, the Underboss Scatter is paid at 50X, 100X or 300X, respectively. What’s more, if Fat Tony is accompanied by two of the four higher ranking symbols, an additional 15x to 30X bonus is paid.

Another special symbol appearing on the reels is The Slotfather himself. Anytime three or more Slotfather symbols appear on an active payline, in any position, the Bonus Round is triggered and a secondary video window appears. It shows a night scene with six businesses: a Club, a Cigar Store, a Restaurant, a Liquor Mart, a Hotel and a Bar. The player is instructed to click on any three of them to install slot machines. Each business has a hidden cash value, which is revealed when it is selected for slot installation.

After the three businesses have been chosen, the player will be summoned to join the “gang” in their hangout. Another screen appears with the wise guys gathered around a table in a restaurant. The Slotfather tells the player, “You’re a good earner, Kid.” He slides a valise full of money across the table and the player’s winning total is shown before the game reverts back to slot mode.

Two other bonus features appear on The Slotfather. Whenever the Sammy Quickfingers symbol appears next to a Valise symbol on lines 1, 2, or 3, either to the left or to the right, the Sneaky Instant Win activates. Sammy will reach into the Valise and grab a bundle of cash that is instantly awarded to the player.

The other bonus feature is called the Multiplier Mob Bonus. It activates anytime a Frankie da Fixer symbol appears next to a Tommy Gun Symbol, either to the left or to the right. Frankie will pick up his Machine Gun and spray the screen with bullets. Clicking on a bullet hole will then award free spins and a multiplier. If the feature occurs on multiple active paylines simultaneously, the number of free spins is multiplied by the number of active paylines that the feature occurs on.

Note that during the free spins mode, the reel symbols are modified and no other bonuses can be triggered. Also, it is not possible to receive more free spins while free spins are currently playing.
