Launched in 2004 as a replacement for the talent show known as “Pop Idol,” the “X Factor” is a television music competition created by British producer Simon Cowell. Although it originated in the United Kingdom, the franchise has spread to various countries, including Australia and the United States. Aspiring pop singers participate in public auditions, competing to demonstrate that they have that indefinable “something” that characterizes a star—The X Factor.

Development of the TV show format for an online slot game was accomplished by Electracade for major Internet casinos such as Bet365. The X Factor Slot game features 5 reels and 20 paylines, framed by a concert hall motif with bright lights and cheering fans. The control panel runs across the bottom of the screen, with buttons for setting the Stake/Line and the number of Lines in play.

To begin the game, select a stake per line from €0.01 to €5.00 and the number of lines from 1 to 20. The maximum bet is €100. Clicking on “Spin” below the third reel will set the reels in motion. Alternatively, the “Auto Spin” button beneath the fifth reel can be used to set the number of automatic spins from 10 to 50. The Total Stake and Total Paid indicators are below reels two and four, respectively, and the Paytable button is in the lower right corner.

The basic symbols appearing on the reel are all familiar images from the X Factor television show—Compact Discs, Show Tickets, Audio Speakers and Microphones. They pay from 10X to 250X whenever three or more of them match up from left to right on an active payline. Higher payouts are made for catch 3, 4 or 5 Silhouettes, Male Singers, Female Singers or X Factor Logos in a row, from 100X to 5000X. There is no wild symbol on the reels.

Two separate Bonus Features are available on the X Factor Slot. The Judges Bonus is triggered anytime three or more Judges Bonus scatter symbols appear on the reels in any position. The more Judges Bonus symbols that appear on screen, the larger the potential award that will be played for in the bonus round: a Total Stake multiplier of 20X for three symbols, 50X for four symbols and 200X for five.

At the start of the bonus round, the player faces four judges in silhouette. Clicking on the red “Reveal Verdict” button will show the first Judge’s vote, “Yes” or “No.” A “No’ vote ends the bonus with no award being won and returns the “unlucky” player to the auditions. A ‘Yes’ vote doubles the award and advances the decision to the next judge. The player then has the option to “Collect” or “Double or Nothing” with a chance to double the award again. Should a judge vote “No” at any point, the bonus ends with no winnings.

The second Bonus Feature is called the “Boot Camp Bonus.” It is triggered by catching three or more Blue X symbols on an active payline from left to right. The reward for three Blue X symbols is 5 free spins, for four symbols it is 10 free spins and for five symbols it is 15 free spins. Free spins are played at the same total stake as the spin that triggered the round.

Awards from any winning outcomes during the free spins are accumulated and added to any winnings from the triggering spin. Note that free spins cannot be re-triggered from within the Boot Camp Bonus, nor is the Judges Bonus available. There are, however, special “Star” symbols on the reels, and if ten of them can be collected before the free spins end, an additional bonus called the “”Live Final” is activated.

In the Live Final, the player picks from a number of categories to construct a “performance.” These include appearance, attitude, singing style, motivation and music type. Next, a random cash prize is awarded for Performance and Audience Reaction before the Judges’ Verdict is given and a multiplier of 1X to 10X is applied to the prize. The player may then choose to collect the bonus offer or try again, in which case the subsequent offer may be higher or lower. Up to 3 offers are available. If the first two are rejected, the third will be the value of the Live Final.
