Virtual Darts Betting

Greater coverage of darts events by the BBC, Sky Sports and ITV in recent years has had a marked influence on the popularity of the sport. As more and more tournaments have been aired, bookmakers have been featuring match betting on every televised game, including team events as well as individual head-on-head contests. Now it seems that punters can’t get enough of the betting action, so software developers are launching “virtual darts” games for betting opportunities 24/7.

One such application is Playtech’s original game called “Darts,” a casino arcade feature that allows players to bypass the pub and experience the thrill of a good toss right from home on their computers. This fixed odds game displays a dart board in the center of the screen, which is identical to a professional dart board in every way. Clicking on “Throw” launches the darts one by one.

Several basic bets are offered in Darts. The first is that any of the three darts thrown will hit a specified section of the dart board: single, double or treble rings and the inner or outer bull. There is also a dart combination bet, which requires the three darts to hit a particular combination a certain number of times, from zero to three. Another possible wager is on the total score of all the darts by selecting a specified range: 3~38 for Lo, 39~41 for Mid and 42~180 for Hi.

A more recent Playtech innovation is “Jackpot Darts,” which adds even sharper graphics and audio plus a progressive jackpot worth upwards of €25,000 to make the game more interesting. To win the progressive, the player must wager on all three darts hitting the bull’s eye prior to the game in which that rare combination of throws occurs.

To begin a game of Jackpot Darts, the player makes from one to five wagers in combination. Betting opportunities include singles, doubles, trebles, outer bull, inner bull, lo/mid/hi and 1-20 singles. Wagering on the latter, for example, pays 9-to-1 when successful. The outer bull pays 64X while the inner one pays 125X. Betting amounts range from €0.10 to €10.00 per selection.

Once the bets are in place, clicking on the “Throw” button launches three darts in turn. There is no “aiming” per se. Where they land is determined by a random number generator pattern. As each dart lands, winning wagers are highlighted in blue below the target upon the otherwise red game board, which indicates the wager category, type of wager, stake, payout odds and winnings.

A separate chalkboard on the left shows where the three darts land, their total and the amount of the stake/win. Re-betting is enabled after each game with a single click. Jackpot Darts is available exclusively at Playtech-affiliated casinos, such as Bet365.

Microgaming also offers similar virtual darts software, but with a few unique wrinkles. Known as “Shanghai Darts,” the game has a “colours” betting option so that wagers may be made on any of four areas of the board—black, white, red or green. The player attempts to predict how many areas of a given colour will be hit during a throw or whether the three darts will each hit a different colour—so-called “Mixed Bag” betting.

Another wagering option is to bet on the actual, accumulated score of the three darts thrown, not just the lo/mid/hi ranges. And there is an extended “Ranges” option, which enables betting of six different range totals: 3~5, 6~12, 13~25, 26~45, 46~100 and 101~180. There is, however, no progress with this game, which is available at online casinos like Ladbrokes.
