The fictional character known as “Wolverine” was created for Marvel Comics by writer Len Wein and art director John Romita, Sr. in 1974. A year later, the mutant with animal-keen senses and retracting claws joined the superhero group called The X-Men and he would later be featured in his own series as well as part of Marvel’s “Alpha Flight” and “The Avengers” teams.

The back story on Wolverine is that he has been around since the 1880s, going by the name Logan, and his particular form of mutation includes a healing factor that slows down his aging and enables him to live beyond a normal human lifespan. In one version of Logan’s life, he has a mutant brother (or father), Victor Creed, whose alter ego is known as “Sabretooth,” who also possesses the anti-aging gene.

In 2000, Twentieth Century Fox released the motion picture hit “X-Men,” featuring Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. He reprised that role in 2003’s “X2” and then “X-Men: The Last Stand” in 2006. In 2009, he got the starring role all to himself in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” which included the Creed-Sabretooth character played by Liev Schreiber. A sequel to the Wolverine saga is scheduled for release in 2013, wherein the ageless mutant travels to Japan to train with a samurai warrior.

The popularity of the beast-like antihero inspired software developer Cryptologic to produce Wolverine slots as part of its Marvel Heroes line-up of games. This five-reel, 25-payline version includes the Costumed Wolverine as the wild symbol and Sabretooth as the scatter symbol. It also has symbols for Jean Grey, a telepathic mutant from the X-Men saga, and a dark-looking Logan.

The Cryptologic Wolverine slots have credit denominations range from €0.01 to €5. It is possible to wager one credit per line up to a maximum bet of €125. Adjusting the value of each credit is accomplished by clicking on the up-down arrows next to the Bet window beneath the fourth and fifth reels. Start the game by clicking “Spin.” Winnings are shown in the “Paid” display at the bottom of the screen, with the current Balance appearing immediately to the left and the Total Bet to the right. Using Autoplay enables repetition of up to 99 bets.

In keeping with the story line of the comic book series, winning combinations of symbols on the reels include matching three or more Dog Tags, Scratch Marks, Compasses, Boots, Backpacks or X-Ray Films. Higher payouts are awarded for lining up Body Armor, Adamantium Claws or the character symbols on an active payline. The Costumed Wolverine Wild substitutes for any symbol except the Sabretooth scatter.

The highest line payout possible is awarded for five consecutive Costumed Wolverine symbols, worth 3,000 times the line bet. Other payouts range from 4X to 1,500X multipliers. There are also three progressive jackpots awarded randomly—the Marvel Hero Jackpot beginning at €5,000, the Super Hero Jackpot starting from €500 and the Hero Jackpot from €50. Like all linked Marvel Jackpot games, the more that is bet the more likely the chances are of receiving one of the three jackpots.

Getting five Scattered Sabretooth symbols pays 100 times the total bet, while 4, 3 or 2 award 20X, 5X and 1X, respectively. The “Wolverine vs. Sabretooth Feature” is activated whenever three or more Scattered Sabretooths appear on any of the reels. The regular slots game is suspended and the scene shifts to a desolate snowfield, where Wolverine must battle his fellow mutant in an animated role-playing mode, using Slash, Kick or Ballistic controls to attack.

Up to five possible bonus rewards can be won for successful attacks, but the Feature ends whenever Sabretooth wins or is completely defeated. There is also a special re-spin feature that is activated by the appearance of three or more Costumed Wolverine icons. During this bonus, the Costumed Wolverine symbols freeze in place for one spin, while the remaining two reels will re-spin, offering a shot at a winning combination.
