The Cambridgeshire Betting

Through 2010, Newmarket’s historic three-day Cambridgeshire Meeting was always held on the cusp of October each year. But beginning in 2011, the event has been moved up one week earlier in the calendar. The late September gathering now features a total of seven Group-level conditions races, making it the third biggest festival at the “home of racing” on the Rowley Mile course, right behind the Guineas’ Meeting and Future Champions Day.

Sponsored by Totesport, the Cambridgeshire Meeting offers three Group 1 races, one Group 2 race and three Group 3 races. Also on the card is one of the nation’s top handicaps—the nine-furlong betfred Cambridgeshire.

The action begins on a Thursday, when the Group 3 Somerville Tattersall Stakes is the main highlight, a seven-furlong contest for two-year-olds. Such notable entries as Grand Lodge and Milk It Mick have succeeded in this race and then gone on to triumph in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes.

On Friday, the running of the Group 1 Shadwell Fillies Mile for two-year-old fillies will be expected to attract crowds of race-goers. Transferred from Ascot, it is a new addition to Newmarket’s list of juvenile races, and it is joined on the card by two excellent Group 3 contests—the Sakhee Oh So Sharp Stakes and the Nayef Joel Stakes.

There are also two Listed races on Friday, the Mawatheeq Rosemary Stakes and the Aqlaam Godolphin Stakes, as well as the Standing For Success Silver Cambridgeshire Handicap. The latter is intended especially for horses that did not make the cut for Saturday’s big handicap race.

Of course, Saturday is the main day for racing. In addition to the betfred Cambridgeshire with its cavalry charge of 30 or more horses up the Rowley Mile track, there are two important Group 1 events. One is the mile-long Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes for older fillies. The other is the six-furlong Jaguar Cars Cheveley Park Stakes for two-year-old fillies.

Also on the Saturday card is the Group 2 Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes, which has been transferred here like the Somerville Tattersall Stakes as Ascot makes room in its schedule for the new QIPCO British Champions Day in October. Certainly Ascot’s loss is Newmarket’s gain, and the Cambridgeshire Meeting is the perfect venue for this mile-long £125,000 event.

Accompanied children under the age of 18 are admitted free to all enclosures at Newmarket for the three days of Cambridgeshire racing. On Saturday, the hosts offer lots of entertainment and activities for children, making it a great day to bring the whole family along.

One popular feature is the Rowley’s Kids Club, which sets up on the Hyperion Lawn with face painting, drama groups, games and workshops to inspire youthful creativity and imagination.

Of course, betting is one of the key attractions of the Cambridgeshire Meeting, and there are three ways to wager at Newmarket Racecourse. First is the Tote for pari-mutuel betting, and there are Tote kiosks to be found in all enclosures. The minimum wager on the Tote is £2, and Tote betting vouchers can be purchased in advance along with admission tickets.

A second way to wager is with the trackside bookmakers. They are located in the Grandstand & Paddock Enclosure as well as within the Rowley/Garden Enclosure. Their minimum stakes are advertised along with the odds offered on each horse.

A third wagering opportunity is presented by the On-Course Betting Shops, which are quite similar to High Street betting shops. They offer a variety of different bets and typically require smaller minimum stakes than the trackside bookmakers.

And, of course, for those who cannot make to the fixtures in person, betting online is available. In fact, Internet-based race and sports books provide the easiest access to odds and all of the various betting types, from Win and Place to Each Way, Exactas, Accumulators and more.
