Pre-season friendly preview and odds: Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid
August 04, 2016 01:35am - MetLife Stadium, New Jersey
International Champions Cup
Two giants of European football will go head-to-head in New Jersey on Thursday night as Carlo Ancelotti prepares to lead out his Bayern Munich side against former club Real Madrid in the International Champions Cup.
Global giants set to clash in New Jersey as pre-season campaign gets serious
As the new football season approaches, the importance of each pre-season match grows. Fitness level rise, new players are integrated, tactics and formations become established and the competitive edge starts to return. With that in mind, this clash between two of the biggest and most popular teams in the world could be coming at just the right time. As is often the case in football, there is an added edge as Bayern boss Carlo Ancelotti faces the club that relieved him of his duties a little over a year ago.
Both teams began their ICC campaigns with defeats - the Germans falling in a penalty shootout against AC Milan and Real Madrid being humbled 3-1 by Paris Saint-Germain - but both have since bounced back with impressive wins. Bayern strolled to a 4-1 win over Serie A team Inter in Charlotte, North Carolina last weekend, while Real Madrid edged to a 3-2 win over Premier League stars Chelsea in Michigan on Saturday.
Bayern`s win was notable for a first half hat-trick by American striker Julian Green, who impressed as the Germans wrapped up the game with four goals in the first 45 minutes. Veteran midfielder Franck Ribery bagged the other as Inter were left reeling by the ruthless onslaught of their opponents.
The game between Real Madrid and Chelsea attracted a crowd of over 105,000 - the biggest ever at a football match in the USA - and those that attended were treated to a an exciting game, with the Spanish side scoring three times in the first 45 minutes to leave the Premier League team chasing the game. A late brace from Eden Hazard was not enough to salvage anything but pride for the Blues.
With both teams finding their form ahead of their respective Super Cup clashes later this month, this should be an intriguing clash with a close result expected.
Team news -. Possible line-ups:
Bayern Munich:
