Italy`s Sara Errani will take on Lauren Davis of the United States in the first round of the WTA Monterrey Open tomorrow. The former has had some success in this tournament before having picked up the doubles title in 2012 with fellow countrywoman Roberta Vinci and is a 16/1 (Coral) shout to pick up this year`s singles title. The 27-year-old has previously reached the semi-finals of this competition in the same year as her doubles triumph. This was her best finish having previously been knocked out in the second round in 2011.

Davies, six years her opponents junior, will be making her debut in the WTA event by featuring in the first round against Errani.

The two women have met on court in WTA competitions twice before, their current head-to-head reading 1-1. The key stat, however, is that Errani`s victory came on hard, the same surface category that they will be playing on in Mexico tomorrow, whilst the Ohio-born starlet came up trumps on grass. Both of these matches were played in tournaments last year.

The Italian`s victory came in the year`s Apia International in Australia, the second round victory being ground out in straight sets. The current 12th rank in the world and then third seed won the first set by seven games to five before sealing the second 6-2. Another straight sets victory for Errani can be backed at the best price of 6/5 (bet365, Sports Winner, Titanbet, william hill) whilst the first game to finish 7-5 to the eight-time WTA title holder can be obtained at 11/1 at bet365, betfred, Betvictor and Coral.

That match`s winner would be knocked out in the quarter-final of this competition at the hands of eventual tournament victor Tsvetana Pironkova (7-6, 6-3). Errani had previously beaten her doubles partner Vinci 6-4, 6-2 in the opening round.

Errani was the seventh seed in last year`s Aegon International but bit the dust in the first stage at the hands of the American qualifier. Davis beat the Italian by a tie-break in the first set before securing an easy 6-2 second set triumph. Four-to-one (betfair, Coral, william hill) says that Davis will be able to beat her opponent without dropping a set tomorrow whilst it`s 10/3 (william hill) for the second set to finish 6-2 to one player or the other for the third time in succession.

Bet365 have odds of 12/5 on their being a tie-break at any point during tomorrow`s match-up whilst the same bookmaker have a price of 3/10 on their not being one between the pair.

Following another victory over Daniela Hantuchova in the second round (6-3, 6-3), Davis would eventually lose out in the quarter-finals to eventual winner Madison Keys. That tie would end 6-2, 6-1 to her compatriot.

Following her hard court victory over her opponent, Errani, this year`s Monterrey Open second seed is the 1/2 favourite with most bookmakers to progress through to the second round with a win over Davis. The American, who is available at 50/1 (sportingbet) to claim her first WTA title here, can be backed at odds of 24/13 (888sport, unibet) to take down her seeded opponent.

Apart from her triumph in the final in Rio De Janeiro, Errani has been somewhat disappointing in her other appearances this year. The 5` 4" right-hander could only make the second round in Acapulco in her last tournament outing despite being the second seed in this hard court competition. She had previously made it through to the third round in the first Grand Slam of the season, the Australian Open.

Ranked 54th in the world, Davis has performed somewhat better this year, losing out in the Auckland semi-final to Venus Williams before being beaten by the same player in the second round of the Australian Open.
