F1 hits Silverstone on Sunday July 8 for the ninth Grand Prix of the 2012 championship as a plethora of drivers aim to close the gap on leader Fernando Alonso who recorded his second victory of the season in Valencia to move 20 points clear of the chasing pack.

Few expected Alonso and Ferrari to be heading the standings mid-way through the campaign after a somewhat sketchy summer of testing which left the two times World Champion questioning whether he would indeed be competitive and in the thick of things at the front of the grid.

But consistency has really been the name of the game for Alonso who has completed all Grand Prix to date, clocking up crucial points race by race as his peers have suffered with a mixture of technical faults and unexpected retirements.

Lewis Hamilton became the latest driver to fall within that bracket at the European Grand Prix, as despite maintaining his 100% completion rate in 2012, the Brit finished a lowly 19th after a failure took him well out contention when in line for a podium result.

Hamilton currently lies third in the championship, 23 points behind Alonso – and he will be desperate to score on home soil in order to keep his title dreams alive.

Mark Webber is the man separating Alonso and Hamilton on 91 points and the Aussie will fancy his chances of picking up decent points at Silverstone.

The veteran speedster has notched up five fourth placed finishes so far in 2012 and he is likely to be in the shake up once more as the British Grand Prix usually plays to his strengths – Webber won the race in 2010 and has frequently crossed the line well up into the points.

Webber’s team mate Sebastian Vettel was left frustrated in Valencia after crashing out and the dual World Champion now needs a quick success to put himself back in the hunt for a third consecutive Drivers Championship.

The 24-year-old took the chequered flag back in 2009 and is likely to start favourite this time around with a strong qualification display expected.

Jenson Button may have won the first race of the campaign in Melbourne but a string of poor results has left the former champion languishing on 49 points and needing a minor miracle to become a factor overall this season.

The Brit has finished no higher than eighth on his last five Grand Prix starts and confidence must surely be ebbing away from the Brit who looks set to be a clear second best to Hamilton once again this year.

Button is well down in the betting for Silverstone glory and headed by both Lotus drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Roman Grosjean who could definitely challenge for a podium finish as they did in Valencia.

Mercedes pair Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher complete the shortlist of possible Silverstone contenders but it is Sebastian Vettel who is taken to get his campaign back on track with a victory and 25 precious World Championship points.
