Paddy Power Novelties

Have you ever wanted a dream league featuring Real Madrid, Barcelona, Man City, Man Utd and Bayern Munich, well now you can as paddy Power have priced up the ‘mythical specials’ including two special leagues and one special top goalscorer market.

How this works is you are backing one team from those 18 listed (see website for full list) to claim the most domestic league points that season. The favourites are Real Madrid and Celtic both of whom are 7/2. Real reached 100 points last season, winning 32, drawing four and losing just twice. 95-100 appears to be the range for Spanish League champions (2008-09 the last time the Winners of La Liga had points that fell below this total). In fact even the second placed side has in the last three seasons managed to score above 90 points. Real at 7/2 and Barcelona at 5/1 look strong runners in this market.

Celtic at 3/1 could appeal to some as the Glasgow side will be expected to dominate the SPL without Rangers. Of the five losses suffered last season, two of these came against Rangers. Celtic finished on 93 points last season, seven behind Real Madrid. It could go two ways for Celtic, they could coast through the league rattling off a record high score or they could ease off a little if they make the Champions League group stages and be tempted to rest players in the SPL.

Could an English side top this market? Man City and Man Utd both hit 89 points this season, but that was the highest margin for the last three seasons. Only one of their last six English champions have scored higher than 89 (Man Utd got 90 in 08/09). The English League could be a tough competitive one this season with an improved Chelsea,Tottenham and Liverpool under new management. Throw in the fact that the three promoted sides have money to spent and this suggests it could be tough again for the champions of England to break the 90 point mark.

Rangers must be the logical betting choice at 5/1. Placed in the Third Divison Rangers (or whatever you call them these days) should be able to walk through this league. The third division only has 36 games (two less than La Liga & EPL), but even so 30 wins would see Rangers reach the 90 mark. 33 would see them hit 99 (one less than the 100 Madrid hit last season).

If Rangers are the outright tip then we might suggest PSG as an each-way hope at 16/1 (1/5, 1,2,3,4). The French side have added so much fire power to their side that they should walk through their French League which is also a 38 game season.

In addition to this we have a B league with another group of 18 teams priced up. The market is headed by PSV at 7/2. The Dutch side finished third last season with 69 points. That was the mark that second favourites Tottenham reached last season and they are 11/2 alongside Liverpool. Newcastle EW at 16/1 looks value on a side who finished just four points behind Tottenham last season and 13 ahead of Liverpool.

The bookmakers have also priced up a top scorer market with Cristiano Ronaldo (15/8) and Lionel Messi (2/1) both players netting 96 goals between them in the League last season and they look tough to oppose. Those looking for some each-way value may be interested in Zlatan Ibrahimovic at 22/1, behind the creative talents of Nene, Jeremy Menez, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Javier Pastore, the Swede should see an awful lot of the ball in goalscoring positions.
