800m: Pamela Jelimo seems to like Olympic years after winning Gold in Beijing in 2008 the Kenyan had three quiet years, but seems to have bounced back in 2012. She was victorious in the Kenyan trials before setting the leading time in the World this year at a meeting in Belgium. Bookmakers make Jelimo the 9/4 (general) favourite. Fantu Magiso is the 7/2 (BWin) second favourite. The Ethiopian has already beaten Jelimo this year, but has not competed since June. World champion Mariya Savinova is the 5/1 (sportingbet) third favourite. The Russian runner was third in the European Championships and will hope to be among the medalists here. Media interest will be on Caster Semenya who attracted such attention when winning Gold in 2009. The South African won a Silver in 2011 and is rated a 6/1 (Skybet/ladbrokes) chance for Gold.

1500m: This is a highly competitive race with 12 women having ran sub four minute miles this year. The favourite is Abeba Aregawi who is 3/1 (general), she has the second fastest time of the year (though fastest Mariam Alaoui Selsouli has been expelled from the games for a failed drugs test) and will be the one to beat. European champion Asil Cakir beat Aregawi in Paris and is a 7/2 (Stan James/Bodog) hope for Gold here. Ethiopian Genzebe Dibaba is the 9/2 (general) third favourite while Russian duo Ekaterina Kostetskaya (12/1-Skybet) and Tatyana Tomashova (50/1-paddy Power/ladbrokes) are also expected to be in the mix.

5000m: Vivian Cheruiyot is the odds on favourite with all but one bookmaker (sportingbet) who offer a stand out 5/4 on the double world champion. The Kenyan was the winner at the recent London GP and has the fastest time in the world this year, at 5/4 she looks great value. The strongest challenge is expected to come from Meseret Defar (11/4-BWin) with the Ethiopian coming close to beating Cheruiyot in Rome. These two though are head and shoulders above the rest, with the others expecting to be battling for Bronze.

10,000m: Kenyan Vivian Cheruiyot is once again the favourite and is 11/10 (paddy Power) hope for the Gold. Her competition is expected to come from Tirunesh Dibaba who is 15/8 (Totesport/betfred). The Ethiopian missed all of 2011 with injury but has returned strong and the defending chanpion could just deny Cheruiyot the double.

Marathon: This is another race that comes down to a battle between Kenya and Ethiopia. The Kenyans are represented by African record holder Mary Keitay (11/8-general) and the top two from the World Championship Edna Kiplagat (11/1-william hill) and Priscah Jeptoo (16/1-paddy Power). The Ethiopians will send out a strong team also, headed by Tiki Gelana. Gelana is a 7/1 (BWin) hope while teammate Aselefeh Mergia is a 20/1 (BWin) chance.

3000m Steeplechase: The market is headed by World Champion Yuliya Zaripova. The Russian has been clocking some good times and bookmakers have taken note making 10/11 (Sportingbet/paddy Power/ladbrokes) favourite. The fastest time in the World this year is held by Milcah Chemos Cheywa a 4/1 (general) hope, while Habiba Ghribi will hope to build on her Silver from the 2011 World Championship and is rated 7/1 by BWin and ladbrokes.

20km Walk: Olga Kaniskina is the queen of the major championships and has not lost in one since 2007. The Russian is a 2/1 (william hill) hope for another Gold medal to add to her collection. The field though are gaining on her and Chinese walker Liu Hong 3/1 (BWin) and fellow Russian Elena Lashmanova 6/1 (Coral) look the value.
