Atletico Madrid vs. Real Madrid - Betting preview and odds

October 4, 2015 20:30pm - Vicente Calderon

La Liga

The highlight of this weekend’s La Liga schedule takes place on Sunday night as Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid go head-to-head in El Derbi Madrileno.

Atleti beaten by rivals

Diego Simeone’s team have already lost to two of their top four rivals this season and will be keen to avoid a third defeat on Sunday night. After losing to Barcelona four weeks ago, they suffered another blow last week when they went down by one goal to nil at league leaders Villarreal. That goal was scored by Atleti’s own player Leo Baptistao who is currently on loan at El Madrigal. They currently sit in fifth place in the league and are the only side in the top eight to have lost more than one game.

The disappointment continued this week for Los Colcheneros when they went down 2-1 at home to Benfica in their latest Champions League group match.

Real enjoy unbeaten start

Real are one of three clubs that have yet to lose a game in the Spanish Primera Division. Under the guidance of new boss Rafa Benitez, Los Blancos have scored 14 goals (the second highest in the league behind Celta de Vigo), and only conceded one (to Athletic Club), giving them the highest goal difference in the league by some margin.

The former Liverpool coach has also guided his team to a perfect start in the Champions League with two wins, six goals scored and none conceded. Since Rafa’s arrival, the 10-time European champions have conceded just four goals in 16 matches in all competitions including pre-season friendly games.

Team news

The home side will have to make do without the services of Koke but otherwise Diego Simeone has a fully-fit squad at his disposal.

Fit-again James Rodriguez and Sergio Ramos could both be in contention for a return to the Real starting XI while Gareth Bale still remains a doubt. The Welsh international is still recovering from a calf injured picked up in the Champions League game against Shaktar Donetsk.

Betting odds and tips

Real Madrid used to dominate these games but that all changed when the Argentinean coach took over. Since then the team in red and white has been in driving seat having lost just one of the last eight meetings between the sides in all competitions.

The homes side won this fixture 4-0 last term but their rivals should be much harder to break down under Rafa Benitez. Real Madrid are in great form while Atletico have had a shaky start to the season by their current high standards.

This should be a close game but the away team should just edge by a 0-1 or 0-2 score line. You can back the team in white to prevail at 6/4 with Skybet. The 12/1 available from Betvictor for a correct score of 0-2 also looks like decent value.
