Sunderland and Newcastle will play out the Tyne and Wear Derby this afternoon, the Black Cats aiming to move four points clear of the relegation places. This afternoon`s hosts, Sunderland, currently sit one point above both Queens Park Rangers and Burnley in the drop zone but could move above both Aston Villa and Hull with an all-important victory. With Burnley playing Tottenham this morning, Sunderland could drop into the bottom three with a defeat against their neighbours.

Newcastle sit in 13th place in the Premier League and will be hoping to make movements towards the top half with a victory this afternoon. A win would see the Magpies clamber above both Crystal Palace and Everton though a defeat would leave John Carver`s side liable to slide further down the top tier of English football, a dalliance with the bottom three not yet out of the question.

The two clubs have met once already this season, this being in the reverse fixture at St. James` Park. A late goal from Adam Johnson saw Sunderland snatch the victory away from home, the game goalless right until its dying minutes.

Bet365 have the best price on the score being 1-0 to the Stadium of Light outfit once again, that price being 7/1. Johnson is a 12/1 (bet365, betfair, Betvictor) shout to be the first player to hit the ball into the back of the net. boylesports` 17/10 says the game will be goalless at half time whilst 51/10 with both 888sport and unibet is the price on the game being tied at half time but Sunderland grabbing the winning goal in the second 45.

Indeed it is Sunderland, with their home advantage, who are the favourites to take all three points from this derby clash. william hill have the best price on a home victory, that being 13/8. Otherwise, Newcastle can be backed at 11/5 at boylesports whilst a draw is up for grabs at 23/10 at Skybet.

A win for Sunderland would be their first three points in eight games, their last victory coming on the last day of January as they beat Burnley at home by two goals to nil. A goalless draw with West Brom at home means that the Wearside club have only picked up four points in their last five Premier League home games.

The two goals they grabbed against Burnley have been the only two goals they have managed to score at home in these last five games. Most bookies have 15/2 on the tie ending goalless whilst 10/11 (betfred, william hill) says both teams will not score.

Connor Wickham grabbed the opener against Burnley with Jermain Defoe making sure the club doubled their advantage. Wickham is 8/1 (Numerous) to be able to break the deadlock once again whilst former England international Defoe can be backed at 11/5 (Betvictor) to add to his tally at any time.

With three points from their last five Premier League games, Newcastle are going through a similar poor run of form under John Carver. Away from home the Magpies have picked up four points in their last five matches but failed to bag a goal in their last two encounters, conceding a total of eight. Coral`s 13/2 says that the club will concede over 2.5 goals in their third consecutive away match. Betvictor have 31/10 on Sunderland subjecting their neighbours to a third straight win to nil.

Ayoze Perez is the most likely Newcastle player to score at any time according to the bookmakers, he can be backed at the best price of 10/3 at ladbrokes.
