League One and Two Preview 5th Jan

Action continues in League One and League Two this weekend with five games in the higher tier and eight in the lower tier. Here is our guide to some of the best value available.

In League One Doncaster could move top of the table if they can beat Colchester by four or more goals. Donny have played a game less than leaders Tranmere and sit three points behind them. Dean Saunders has to be applauded for the job he has done at the club after the mess that was last season in the Championship. I fully expect Rovers to be in the play-offs if not even in the automatic promotion places at the end of the season. Coral have them at 8/11 to take all three points and this seems fair against a side that are on a seven game losing streak. The best bet in League One is in siding with Crewe to defeat Stevenage. Crewe have won five of their last six games with this one defeat coming away to league leaders Tranmere. At Gresty Road the record reads six wins from their last seven home games. In the reverse fixture in September Crewe were two goals up in eight minutes and outclassing Stevenage but could not hold on and it ended 2-2. In the proceding months Alexander have got better while Stevenage have got worse. Stevenage have won just two of their last eight in the league and one of these came against Hartlepool. Take the 13/10 (william hill) are offering.

I have mentioned in recent articles about how good a player Lee Miller is at Carlisle and I continue to think that he merits backing in the anytime scorer market until bookmakers get wise to him. The Scot failed to fire last time out but he has two in his last three and at 3/1 (paddy Power) to score anytime v Swindon looks a great price.

Into League Two and league leaders Gillingham are at second bottom side Bristol Rovers. Rovers are 14/5 (bet365) for the victory and this is not beyond possibility as they have started to pick up a little taking four points from the two games that John Ward has been in charge of the club. Gillingham arrive also full of confidence after securing a 1-0 victory at Southend last time out. The top of the table side might appeal to many at 21/20 (BetVictor/william hill) however I will be looking elsewhere for value in the division.

It was not the happiest of starts to 2013 for Carl Fletcher as the Plymouth manager was sacked after a run of eight defeats in 13 league games that left the Pilgrims 21st in League Two. One of the golden rules in betting is to stay clear of a game involving sides who have just had a manager sacked as it is unclear just how the team will react. This is a shame as in ordinary week Port Vale at 9/11 (pinnacle) would have been great bet.

The best bet in this division is York at 11/8 (Totesport/betfred/ladbrokes) to see off Exeter. The Minstermen defeated Burton 3-0 last time out and although Exeter have won the last four on the road I think York can get the result here. York played Exeter in September and were just eight minutes away from victory and I think they can get all three points this time.

BEST OF THE BETS

GOLD: Crewe to beat Stevenage, 13/10 (william hill)
SILVER: York to beat Exeter, 11/8 (Totesport/betfred/ladbrokes)
BRONZE: Lee Miller to score anytime v Swindon, 3/1 (paddy Power)
