The last time the World Cup was in South America (1978) Argentina and the Netherlands did battle in the final with the South Americans coming out on top 3-1 after extra time. This time around the two sides will do battle in Brazil with a place in the final at stake. BET365 have Argentina the 7/5 favourites for the game with the Dutch available at 12/5 and the draw in 90 minutes being an 11/5 option while the South Americans are 7/10 to qualify for the final and the Dutch 6/5.

Argentina are five wins from all five games so far in the World Cup including successive single goal victories in the knockout stages where they saw off the European challenge of Switzerland and Belgium. You can get 11/4 that they come out on top by one goal in this game as they have done in all five victorties while if you think it will be a third successive 1-0 victory for the South Americans then it is 5/1.

The Netherlands can take heart from the fact they are unbeaten in their last five meetings with Argentina though none of these battles have been within the last few years. I have been critical of the Dutch in this column previously with suggestions that the game against Spain had made them appear better than they really were. I think limping through games with Mexico and Costa Rica has added weight to my theory though in this case I would go the opposite way and say they have been under-rated. True they needed penalties to see off Costa Rica though that was more down to bad luck and heroic goalkeeping than anything else. Argentina have also been largely unimpressive so far and will be without influential Angel di Maria putting a lot of responsibility on Lionel Messi. Odds of 6/5 the Netherlands in the draw no bet look worth taking in such a close game.

Lionel Messi has scored four of the eight Argentina goals and the Barcelona star is 10/3 to net first or 5/4 to net at anytime. Gonzalo Higuain scored a wonder goal last time around and he looks the better value of the pair at 7/1 to net the opener or 11/4 to score at anytime. Those looking for a Dutch player might be interested in Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie both of whom have netted three goals each. Van Persie is 11/2 to grab the opening goal or 21/10 to score at anytime while Arjen Robben is 7/1 and 11/4 to score anytime. It might make more sense to side with Wesley Sneijder who takes a great set-piece and almost netted against Costa Rica with one. It is 11/1 that he scores the opener and 9/2 at anytime during the game.

The Netherlands, with 12 goals, are the joint highest scorers in the World Cup so far and it is 6/4 that this game has over 2.5 goals and just 1/2 under. Three of the five games involving the Dutch have seen over 2.5 goals while the game with Chile featured two. Argentina though have gone over 2.5 goals in just two of five games with the last two just having one each. If you think both teams score then you can get this at 11/10 while no is a 4/6 shot.

RECOMMENDATION: Netherlands, draw no bet market, 6/5 (bet365)
Gonzalo Higuain to score, first 7/1, anytime 11/4 (bet365)
Wesley Sneijder to score, first 11/1, anytime 9/2 (bet365)
