Following his success at the Olympics can Andy Murray finally smash through that glass ceiling and land an elusive grand slam title?

The final major of the season gets underway from Flushing Meadows at the end of the month (August 27th) and Andy Murray is certain to be among the contenders for the title. Murray reached the semi-finals in New York in 2011 and the final in 2008. The Scot is a fan of the hard court surface and his game is suited to the New York venue. The Olympic Gold medalist is 7/2 (general) to claim the title and no player enters the tournament in as much form as the Scot.

Novak Djokovic has looked a little short of his best but is still rated as the 11/5 (Blue Sq/888sport) favourite to win in New York. The Serb will be tough to oppose if he can find the form that lead him to the title in 2011. Wimbledon Champion and Olympic Silver medalist Roger Federer is 4/1 (general), the Swiss ace must always be respected and it would be no shock if (draw permitting) he and Murray met again in a final. Rafa Nadal missed the Olympics with injury and will hope to return for the US Open. Bookmakers make the Spaniard 5/1 (BetVictor/ladbrokes/You Win) for glory. Those looking for a few at a bigger price might want to keep an eye on the form of Juan Martin Del Potro who is a 10/1 (general) chance. The Argentinian won this event in 2009 and seemed to be back to his best when claiming the Bronze medal at the Olympics. John Isner might be worth an each-way interest at 66/1 (BetVictor). The American reached the last eight at the US Open last year and reached the quarter-finals in the Olympics.

Serena Williams looked in a dominant mood both at Wimbledon and then again at the Olympics, bookmakers are taking no chances and making the American just 11/8 (ladbrokes) to claim the US Open title. Williams is a three time champion here and was a beaten finalist (to Sam Stosur) back in 2011. It looks hard to oppose the American.

Victoria Azarenka will lead the challenge. Azarenka won the Bronze medal at the Olympics and she is the 11/2 (BetVictor) second favourite. Olympic Silver medalist Maria Sharapova is rated a 7/1 (BetVictor) hope, while Sam Stosur is 50/1 (BetVictor) to defend her title. Caroline Wozniacki at 100/1 (boylesports/BetVictor) looks good value on a player who seemed to have found some form at the Olympics before crashing out to Serena. The Dane was a finalist here in 2009 and reached the semi-finals here in 2010 and 2011. Maria Kirilenko is an even bigger priced 200/1 (BetVictor). The Russian looks great value for a player who took a bronze medal at the Olympics and made the semi-final here in 2011. Be sure to grab the early value on this pair as some good results in the hard court season could see prices dropped.

Looking further ahead bookmakers have already priced up Wimbledon 2013 and make Andy Murray 5/1 (Coral) to claim the title. The Scot made the final last year and picked up Olympic Gold at the same venue and 5/1 could look a real steal if you have the patience to wait out this bet. Serena Williams is 11/4 (bet365) for the 2013 Wimbledon after winning the title here and securing Gold, though Williams is such an injury prone player that you don’t want to put too much long term faith in her.
