Championship

Blackpool are just 4/7 for relegation from the Championship as they scramble around to build a squad. I was impressed by Jose Riga in the short spell at Charlton and if they can keep him I would confident they could stay up although you could not blame him if walked away from the mess the club is keen. The value in the Tangerines to be relegated has long since gone and as such it might pay to look elsewhere.

Millwall are 11/4 after finishing the previous season in 19th. Of the last 21 sides to be relegated from the Championship 11 of these have finished this previous season from 16th to 21st which is bad news for the Lions. What is good news is the way the London side ended the season with no defeat in their last eight. Ian Holloway is the right man for a battle and I think he can keep this side up once more.

Rotherham at 3/1 might be a popular bet after coming up in the play-offs. It would be a mistake to write off Steve Evans and his men after back-to-back promotions. Of the last 21 clubs to be relegated from the Championship there is good news for the sides promoted from League One with only four of them going right back down. The Millers will be a hard team to beat and do not look great value in the relegation market.

Charlton are 3/1 shots though I think they might have enough about them this season to stay up. The club will have similar links to Standard Liege that Watford do with Udinese which will allow the Addicks access to a lot of players in January if they are in danger of relegation. I could not put anyone off backing Birmingham at 7/2 for the drop considering they needed an injury time goal to keep them up in their final game of the season. The Blues are having huge ownership issues which has restricted Lee Clark in the transfer market. The Geordie has done smart work and as such I think the price is probably an accurate reflection of their chances.

Huddersfield at 7/2 is a poor price as I see the Yorkshire side finishing closer to the top half than the bottom half. The Terriers played very well early in the season before falling off a little and with the talents of James Vaughan should have more than enough to stay up. Leeds are 7/2 shots and the Yorkshire side could be anything this season with an unproven manager, the sale of their best striker and a somewhat crazy owner. Brentford are 4/1 shots though like Rotherham they can take heart from the record of promoted sides. In addition the Bees have a smart manager in Mark Warburton and have picked up some good talents from the lower leagues this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday at 9/2 look value to be relegated as they too have ownership problems with the proposed takeover taking longer to take than anticipated. It has left Stuart Gray stuck in the transfer market struggling to refresh his squad. The Owls won just one of their last eight last season and maybe the bounce from Gray taking over is no longer a factor in their form.

At bigger prices I might be tempted to have a little interest on Reading at 20/1 for the drop. This is another side who are having ownership issues and it is over 300 days since they last bought a player. Nigel Adkins is a good manager which is a huge plus but when Pavel Pogrebnyak is your only recognised striker then you could struggle. They would not be the first team to drop from the top half of the table one season to relegation slots in the following year as this has happened four times in the last seven seasons.
