Seve Trophy

First held in 2000 this is the eighth staging of the Seve Trophy between Great Britain and Ireland against Continental Europe. The problem with the tournament is that it splits up a team we cheer on every few years in the Ryder Cup. For most it is ahrd to suddenly care out of Thomas Bjorn or Paul Casey who we should cheer on. Put either of those against a US golfer though and the Europe audience knows who to cheer. Perhaps the best idea would be to work out a schedule that would see us take on an International select one time while the US can play the international select on another weekend.

Bookmakers make Continental Europe the 10/17 (BWIN) favourites which looks a little short as they have won just one of the seven previous and are missing Henrik Stenson and Sergio Garcia their two highest ranked players.

Team GB & Ireland are without Donald, Poulter, Rose, McDowell, McIlroy and Westwood but still have enough talent to keep this competitive and of the two their odds of 6/4 (paddy Power/STAN JAMES) on Team GB & Ireland look the better value.

Paul Casey is the 5/1 (GENERAL) favourite to finish as the top scorer for Great Britain and Ireland ahead of Jamie Donaldson at 13/2 (GENERAL). The value is Scott Jamieson who won three of four matches in this 2011 and has finished in the top 25 in his last two starts and is 12/1 (GENERAL). He looks even better at 16/5 (sportingbet) to see off Paul Lawrie, Stephen Gallacher and Marc Warren to finish as top Scotsman.

The race to finish as top Continental European is headed by Nicolas Colsaerts at 11/2 (GENERAL). The value could lie in Thomas Bjorn at 8/1 (ladbrokes) who is in great form and took 2.5 points in 2011. Gregory Bourdy is another option at 14/1 (ladbrokes) as the Frenchman should be at home on the Paris course.

Over in the US, they have a similar tournament that sees Team USA take on the Rest of the World in the Presidents Cup. This is a much smarter idea than the Seve Trophy as it unites rather than splits the team.

Betting wise this looks a one-sided heat as it is 1/3 (GENERAL) a USA victory while a Rest of the World win is 3/1 (YOU WIN). The US have dominated this in the past losing just one of the ten previous, winning eight of them. So it is hard to side with anyway in the Outright market. Like the Seve Trophy the best betting plan is to take individual players to finish as the top scorer in their seelcted category.

For the International team Adam Scott is the 4/1 (GENERAL) favourite while Charl Schwartzel might be the value pick at 7/1 (GENERAL). The top American scorer is headed by Tiger Woods At 11/2 (YOU WIN/BWIN) followed by Phil Mickelson at 15/2 (boylesports). The choice though comes down to the two men who contested the World Matchplay Championship this year Hunter Mahan and Matt Kuchar. The latter won but is 9/1 (GENERAL) but Mahan is a much bigger 14/1 (SPREADEX) chance to be top American and 20/1 (GENERAL) to be top Combined scorer.
