Bookmakers can not decide who to make favourite, between Man City striker Sergio Aguero and Man Utd forward Wayne Rooney, in the market for ’Premier League Top Scorer.’ Both players are 8/1 (general) to land the Golden Boot for the 2012-13 season. Rooney netted 27 last season and Aguero 23, enough to secure second and third spots. Last year’s winner Robin Van Persie has question marks over where will be playing next season (after confirming he will not sign a new deal at Arsenal) therefore the Dutchman has been pushed out to 10/1 (general).

Not since 1999-2000 season, when Kevin Phillips won the award, has the trophy gone to a player outside of an elite four (Man Utd, Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea) in fact in the last 11 season six of these winners played for the eventual champions (though one was a tied winner). Therefore if you have a leaning towards City or Utd for the title then it might pay to back Aguero or Rooney. One note of warning though is Robin Van Persie, it is thought that both Manchester clubs could be interested in Van Persie and the presence of a great goalscorer at the front could see the roles of Aguero or Rooney shift a little.

Ladbrokes make Fernando Torres the 12/1 fourth favourite. Fernando Torres won the Golden Boot award at the Euros in limited appearances. The Spaniard will benefit from the absence of Didier Drogba and the addition of creative talents Eden Hazard and Marko Marin alongside Juan Mata (who was second in assists last season behind David Silva).

Carlos Tevez is next in line at 20/1 (BetVictor) and will be among the goals in a full season, but might split playing time with Balotelli (also 20/1-general) and Eden Dzeko. Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is also 20/1 (Skybet/ladbrokes), but this would require Suarez to build on the 11 goals he scored last season. Suarez will also miss the early part of the season due to particiaption in the Olympics. Javier Hernandez at 22/1 (sportingbet) knows where the goal is, but he might be forced to split time with Danny Welbeck at 25/1 (general).

Those looking for each-way value might be interested in the 25/1 (general) available on Pappis Cisse who was a revelation in the second half of the season at Newcastle. The Senegal striker netted 13 in 14 league games and was not selected as part of the Senegal squad for the Olympics. Cisse looks guaranteed a starting berth at Newcastle and makes plenty of each-way sense. Another who could appeal each-way is Darren Bent at 28/1 (Skybet/Coral). Bent missed a number of games last season with injury but should return fully fit after a season out. Villa will be a lot more attacking under new boss Paul Lambert than they were under Alex McLeish. Nikica Jelavic will also appeal at 33/1 (Betvictor/Coral) after netting nine in his 13 games for Everton after his January move.

Even bigger priced each-way options could be new Reading striker Pavel Pogrebnyak 80/1 (sportingbet/BetVictor/ladbrokes) scorer of six in 12 appearances for Fulham last season. Rickie Lambert has netted goals at every level and with penalty duties 80/1 (ladbrokes) looks very generous. The final tip of the hat is for Norwich striker Grant Holt, Holt netted 15 goals last season and continues to be overlooked by bookmakers. His hunger to prove England wrong for not selecting him for the Euros means Holt is a real player at 100/1 (BetVictor/ladbrokes).
