Formula One has so far followed in the footsteps of Robbie Williams, Soccer and thin Pizzas as something the rest of the world have embraced but the Americans have not quite. Still the powers that be will not be deterred and have gone again with an American GP. This time around Austin, Texas will be the home, just who will be taking the chequered (or should that be starred and striped) flag in front?

So what do we know about Austin? well it is the capital of Texas, it is the 13th most populous city in the USA and it has a music festival. None of that is probably especially helpful though. What will be helpful though is the news that the track in Austin seems to be an amalgamation of some of the best bits from the others on the tour. The Herman Tilke designed track has a Silverstone Becketts complex redesign and also features the 8 turn from Istanbul in reverse. It should suit different cars at different points with the opening and closing sectors of the track looking made for Red Bulls and the long straight middle the other big boys, Ferrari, McLaren and Renault.

Bookmakers make Sebastian Vettel the 33/25 (You Win) favourite to emerge victorious. Vettel has won four of the last five races though could only manage third last time out in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Third mind you is a remarkable achievement considering the German started from the back of the grid after breach of the rules in qualifying. It could be another race in which Red Bull dominate though at those prices on a track which nobody has been on those odds look a little short. Lewis Hamilton is a 3/1 (sportingbet/william hill/pinnacle) chance and the McLaren looked very fast last time out though it was once again undone by technical issues. It seems worth chancing the Brit at these odds as he will continue looking to impress and with no danger of taking into account points in the title race will be able to push the car to the limits. Others expected to be in the mix are Fernando Alonso at 6/1 (BetVictor), Jenson Button 13/1 (sportingbet), Mark Webber 15/1 (Sportingbet) and Kimi Raikkonen 18/1 (You Win). If I think Hamilton is worth taking at 3/1 to win the race then I think he looks even better value at 23/10 (Sportingbet) to start the race from Pole Position. Hamilton has secured pole in a third of races this season (six from 18).

Another recommended bet is a punt on Pastor Maldonado at 11/4 (Blue Sq/888 Sport) to finish among the points. The Williams driver finished fourth in qualifying in Abu Dhabi and seems to be able to get a lot out of the car. The Colombian has started from the front four rows in ten of the 18 races so far this season and will be tough to pass if he can get himself a good qualifying time. In addition consider taking his Williams colleague Bruno Senna to finish among the points. The Williams driver is going well with two top ten finishes in his last two races and eight points finishes this season. Take the 13/8 (Coral) are offering on the Brazilian.

BEST OF THE BETS

GOLD: Lewis Hamilton to qualify on Pole Position, 23/10 (Sportingbet)
SILVER: Lewis Hamilton to win the US GP, 3/1 (Sportingbet/william hill/pinnacle)
BRONZE: Bruno Senna to finish among the points, 13/8 (Coral)
