Sheff U vs Pompey Betting

Sheff Utd take on Portsmouth in the Monday Night Football game this week. The Blades know that a victory here could send them level on points with Tranmere at the top of the League One table. Bookmakers fancy United for victory here with 5/6 (william hill) the best price available on them. It looks a difficult task for Portsmouth as they take on a side unbeaten in their last 12 league games at Bramall Lane (winning six and drawing six). Pompey have won two of their last three though so will not be without hope and might appeal to some at 15/4 (general) while the draw is available at 14/5 (Skybet).

Three of the last five home games for the Blades have ended 1-1 and that result is available at 7/1 (general) while a United 1-0 victory which would have paid in three of their last five league games is the market leader at 13/2 (general). Portsmouth have kept just one clean sheet in the last 16 away games so you would expect the Blades to score. If you think Portsmouth can come out on top then 2-1 might be your best bet which is available at 16/1 (Totesport/betfred/32 Red). I like the look of Izale McLeod to score against Sheff Utd. McLeod has grabbed six in his last six games in all competitions for Portsmouth and is 7/1 (general) to grab the opener here and 12/5 (Blue Sq/888 Sport) to score at anytime. Those looking for a Sheff Utd scorer might be interested in Nick Blackman who has scored in three of the last four league games. Blackman is 9/2 (general) to score first while fellow Blade Dave Kitson is a 5/1 chance (bet365/Bwin/ladbrokes). Portsmouth games tend to involve goals and I think this one will be no exception. You can get 4/5 (ladbrokes) that both teams score and the over 2.5 goals is a best priced 13/15 (pinnacle).

It might be worth a small play on the 11/10 (Stan James) that the second half is the highest scoring. Pompey have scored a league high nine goals in the last 15 minutes of games this season.

If you think the Blades can win League One then you can get them at a best priced 5/2 (Coral) ahead of Swindon and the MK Dons both of whom are now 7/1 (general), leaders Tranmere are 10/1 (Skybet/BetVictor/Stan James), Crawley are 12/1 (BetVictor), Notts County are 14/1 (bet365), Stevenage 16/1 (Skybet/BetVictor), Doncaster 16/1 (boylesports/Blue Sq/888 Sport) and Preston 20/1 (general). One bet I like the look of in the antepost markets is Bournemouth at 6/1 (general) for promotion or 2/1 (BetVictor) on them to finish in the top six. The Cherries have taken ten points from their last four games and are climbing the table under Eddie Howe. Despite their slow to the season Bournemouth are just seven points behind the sixth place side and by taking the top six and promotion markets you have the cover of the play-offs.

At the other end of the table Portsmouth are one of the favourites for the drop though this is more about off the field issues than those on as Michael Appleton has done a remarkable job to make them competitive despite the problems at boardroom level. BetVictor are the only firm currently offering relegation odds and they go 1/4 Pompey are relegated, 1/10 Bury, 2/7 Hartlepool and 13/8 Shrewsbury and 15/8 Scunthorpe.

BEST OF THE BETS

GOLD: Bournemouth to finish top six 2/1 (BetVictor) or to be promoted 6/1 (general)
SILVER: Izale McLeod to score, first 7/1 (general), anytime 12/5 (Blue Sq/888 Sport)
BRONZE: Second half highest scoring between Sheff U & Portsmouth, 11/10 (Stan James)
