After victory in the British Grand Prix (recommended last week here) Mark Webber finds himself now up to second in the drivers’ championship. Webber produced a great ride at Silverstone to pass Alonso late on and take the chequered flag. The result has put the Australian right back in the title race and he is now 6/1 (general) fourth favourite to claim the title. This could be good value as Webber lies just 13 points behind Spaniard Alonso. Though question marks exist as to whether Webber will sign a new deal at Red Bull, the constructors must recognise the importance that one of their men gets the drivers title, whether it be Vettel or Webber.

The title leader Fernando Alonso will be disappointed that he did not win at Silverstone, but he did put distance between himself and Sebasian Vettel extending his lead to over 29 points over Vettel (his lead over Webber is 13 points). Bookmakers make the Spaniard 15/8 (BetVictor/Bodog) to lift the title this season, as seeks his third title (winning previously in 2005 & 2006).

Sebastian Vettel would have mixed feelings about the weekend after finishing third, but losing ground to Fernando Alonso. The German though has his home race next which is one of 11 races still remaining and with his car starting to develop he must be still respected at 9/4 (general).

Lewis Hamilton is fourth in the market, but the McClaren’s had a terrible weekend at Silverstone and he is sitting 37 points behind Alonso and with a car not performing very well. Hamilton looks a poor bet at 5/1 (ladbrokes) that has to be down to the ability of the man himself and not the car. Webber is 6/1 driving the superior car and has a 24 point lead over him in the standings. It looks like being between these four for the title with the next best in the market being Kimi Raikkonen at 25/1 (general).

Red Bull are the dominant team the moment (on 216 points) and it will be a shock to see them not finish top in the Constructors championship. Bookmakers agree and are taking no chances in their prices with ladbrokes 2/7 the best on offer. Those who think that Ferrari can reel them in can get 18/1 (Bodog) which looks a reflection of the poor form of Felipe Massa, but if the Brazilian can get it together then this could be a runner. Alonso is always a points threat and they still have the races to reel in the 64 points. They seem a much more likely option than McClaren who are 6/1 (Bluesq/888sport) despite being 74 points behind Red Bull, they have a car that looks much weaker than their two main rivals and with a driver (Jenson Button) who looks mentally gone.

The next race on the circuit is the German Grand Prix which will take place on Sunday July 22nd at Hockenheim. Bookmakers are already priced up on the race and make Sebastian Vettel 3/1 (betfred/ladbrokes) to win the Grand Prix. It is a race that has so far eluded the German native. Fernando Alonso won here in 2010 and is 5/1 (betfred) to claim the victory here this year, a result that would give him a strong grip on the title. Lewis Hamilton meanwhile is a two-time winner here (2011 and 2008) and is 11/2 (Stan James) to bounce back from a disappointing British Grand Prix. The winner at Silverstone Mark Webber is 6/1 (general) to make it back-to-back victories in the season.
