Premier League preview and odds: Arsenal vs Liverpool
August 14 , 2016 16:00pm - Emirates Stadium
Premier League
Injury-ravaged Arsenal will kick off their new Premier League campaign on Sunday when they welcome Jurgen Klopp`s fluid Liverpool team to the Emirates Stadium in the weekend’s standout game.
Reds looking to take advantage of Gunners` injury crisis
Arsenal are no strangers to an injury crisis and this year looks set to be no exception. With just three days to go until the new term gets underway, Arsene Wenger barely has a fit defender at his disposal and must now prepare his team to face one of the league`s most lively attacking units for the season opener against Liverpool on Sunday.
While Wenger tries to assemble a defence capable of holding the Reds at bay, Jurgen Klopp has a few injury headaches of his own with six players still out of action. Fortunately, some shrewd recruitment in the summer transfer window means that the Merseyside club will be better placed to deal with those absences.
Klopp`s men had a mixed pre-season but laid down an ominous marker for their rivals with their 4-0 demolition of Spanish champions Barcelona. They will need to carry the confidence gained from that game into this opener if they are to claim a rare win at the home of their rivals.
Arsenal remained unbeaten in pre-season and concluded their schedule with a 3-2 win over potential title rivals Manchester City, in which Theo Walcott once again impressed from the bench.
Team news
The Gunners will take to the field without Gabriel Paulista, Per Mertesacker, Danny Welbeck and Carl Jenkinson, while Laurent Koscielny could also miss out.
Meanwhile, James Milner, Daniel Sturridge, Loris Karius, Lucas Leiva, Joe Gomez and Mamadou Sakho are all still under treatment for the Reds.
