Following the conclusion of the US Open, which produced an upset on the men`s side of the draw with victory for Marin Cilic, the Davis Cup once again becomes the focus of attention with two semi-final matches taking place. Both matches start on Friday 12th September with singles matches, followed by doubles on Saturday, with singles matches returning on Sunday.

The first match features the current Davis Cup holders Czech Republic and they will be facing France at Roland Garros. Having successfully defended their Davis Cup title on two previous occasions, the Czech team will feel confident about doing so again and are available at 4/1 with paddypower to do just that. However, they face a difficult tie against a strong French team in front of a partisan crowd in Paris, with the French 2/5 favourites with BetVictor to end the Czech Republic`s dominance of recent years. The Czech`s are 12/5 to win the match, which is being played on clay but the history between the two sides shows that they have been very evenly matched over the years, with 7 wins each from 14 encounters. The Czech Republic did have the easier of the two paths into the semi-final, beating Japan 3-0 whereas France had a close game with Germany, coming through by 3 points to 2. The Czech`s have played a lot of tennis on clay this season, so the surface will not be an issue to them and France are also having to play without Mickael Llodra, who is their specialist doubles player. In addition to this, the Czech team can count on the return of their highest ranked player to the team, Tomas Berdych, who missed the earlier tie against Japan although he has not been in great from recently and clay is not his best surface.

The other Davis Cup semi-final involves Switzerland and Italy, with the match being played on an indoor hard-court surface in Geneva. The Swiss team can boast both Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka in their line up and have the better hard-court players overall. The Italian team also have two players who can be considered a step above their team mates, with Fabio Fognini and Andreas Seppi their leading stars. However, both of these players and indeed their two team mates, much prefer playing on clay and the odds available reflect this fact. Switzerland are clear favourites to win the tie, being 1/16 to successfully overcome the Italians with paddypower, leaving the Italians as 9/1 outsiders with bet365.

In terms of winning the whole event, Switzerland are favourites at 4/6 with Coral but France may offer the best value being 7/2 with SkyBet. With in-form players throughout their team, including Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who has defeated Federer, Djokovic and Murray in recent events, the French will be hoping that this, coupled with home advantage will take them over the line against the Czech Republic and into the final. If they do make the final, it will played in France.
