As most of us know to our detriment after every good party must came a hangover which why I am opposing Bradford at home to Oxford. The League Cup result in midweek was astonishing as they saw off Premier League side Aston Villa 3-1. The win means that Wembley is within touching distance for the Bantams. You could forgive the players and the managers then if they were a little bit distracted. Bradford have won just one of their last five in the league while their opponents on Saturday Oxford are unbeaten in their last seven winning each of their last three. Away from home the stats have looked impressive also with three wins, two draws and just one defeat from their last six. The Bantams will have a put a lot of thought and a lot of work into that game on Tuesday night and while Oxford also played that night I think they will be much the fresher coming into the game. The visitors can be had at an excellent 2/1 with Coral in the draw no bet market.

When Fleetwood and Bristol Rovers met in September Micky Mellon and Mark McGhee were the men in charge now it is the turn of Graham Alexander and John Ward to lead these sides out. The result then was a 0-0 draw and the result this time could be the same this time around. Despite a 2-0 loss at home to league leaders Gillingham Bristol Rovers were applauded off by their own supporters last week after a spirited showing. Opposition manager Martin Allen was full of praise for their performance and it might pay to side with them this weekend to get something from their visit to Fleetwood. The hosts have won just one of their last five games at home and just two of their last nine anywhere. Rovers for their part have had a win, a draw and that loss to Gillingham from their last three games to appeal at 5/4 (betway) in the double chance market (along with the draw).

The game of the day is undoubtedly the one that pits Gillingham against Port Vale. It is a battle of first versus second, it is a battle of the best defence in the league against the best attack, it is a battle between Martin Allen and Micky Adams. Just who will come out on top? Bookmakers make Gillingham 11/10 (general) favourites while the draw is 27/10 (pinnacle) and a Port Vale victory is 11/4 (bet365/Skybet/boylesports). I would not be rushing to back the home side as they have won only two of their last six at home. This looks one to sit out.

A couple of goalscorer bets appeal to me in this division the first of which is in the game between Dagenham and Redbridge and Rochdale. The Republic of Ireland midfielder Ashley Grimes has netted six in his last six games and looks good value at 11/4 (Coral) in the anytime scorer market. Opponents Dagenham and Redbridge have shipped eleven in their last five games so Grimes could clean up (ahem). Speaking of players in goalscoring form this brings me to Southend’s Barry Corr (no relation to the Irish pop sensations). Corr is 15/8 (bet365/paddy Power) in the anytime scorer market which looks good value on a player who has netted four in his last two games. Opponents Exeter have shipped five in their last two games at their own ground.

BEST OF THE BETS

GOLD: Oxford to beat Bradford in draw no bet market, 2/1 (Coral)
SILVER: Bristol Rovers/Draw double chance v Fleetwood, 5/4 (betway)
BRONZE: Ashley Grimes to score anytime v Dagenham & Redbridge, 11/4 (Coral)
