The pick of the World Cup qualifiers this weekend is the one that pits Russia against Portugal. Fabio Capello and his Russian side are the marginal outsiders according to bookmakers despite holding home advantage. Russia have not lost any of their last ten home games while Portugal have won just three of their last ten away games and just one of their last five. I can not be recommending Portugal at 17/10 (general) though I might just avoid Russia as Capello is the kind of manager who likes to keep things tight and could be happy with a point here. Those looking for a bet might want to try a first goalscorer/anytime goalscorer bet on Russian midfielder Viktor Faitzulin. The Zenit midfielder has scored in both Russian qualifiers so far and at 16/1 (bet365) first or 6/1 (bet365) in the anytime market looks worth a little interest.

Wales take on Scotland with both sides knowing that all three points are essential to keep their qualifying hopes alive. It is Scotland who are the 17/10 (general) favourites while Wales are 19/10 (william hill) and the draw is 23/10 (BetVictor). Scotland will be boosted by the return of Steven Fletcher while the Welsh will look to the talents of Gareth Bale to break down the Scots. I do not really feel comfortable siding with either side as both are plagued by problems. As the best player on the pitch the 3/1 (bet365) on Gareth Bale to score at anytime or 17/2 (bet365) to score first looks the best value in this game.

It should be an easy night for England when they take on San Marino in a game that will serve as a huge indicator as to why UEFA and FIFA must put in pre-qualifying into their tournaments. It is expected to be such a one side contest that England are 8/11 with Skybet to score 6+ goals or 9/2 (Stan James) to score ten or more goals. Seeing as England are expected to be basically camped out in the San Marino half possibly the best way to play this is to back the full-backs in the anytime scorer market. Both players are likely to play as wingers and you can get 9/4 (ladbrokes) that Leighton Baines scores at anytime or 17/4 (BetVictor) that Kyle Walker scores anytime.

If England have it easy then the Republic of Ireland have an almost thankless task as they entertain Germany. It is 4/9 (general) a Germany victory while the draw is 15/4 (BWin) and the Republic victory is 8/1 (BetVictor/william hill). Despite the fact that Trappatoni is in charge and will try keep this tight I actually like the look of both teams to score at evens (general). This would have paid in six of the last seven Germany games (only minnows the Faroe Islands have failed to score) and in five of the last six Republic home games.

The best bet of the games this weekend is the 6/4 (Skybet/william hill) are offering on Bosnia-Herzegovina in the draw no bet market against Greece. Bosnia-Herzegovina have lost just one of their last nine big tournament qualifers and that came against Portugal in the play-offs. With 12 goals in their last two games they possess the firepower that their opponents do not. For Greece home has not always been helpful with them winning just three of their last eight in their own country. I like the away team in the draw no bet market here.

BEST OF THE BETS

GOLD: Bosnia-Herzegovina in the draw no bet market v Greece, 6/4 (Skybet/William Hill).
SILVER: Both teams to score in the Rep of Ireland v Germany game, Evens (general)
BRONZE: Leighton Baines to score anytime v San Marino, 9/4 (ladbrokes).
