Cheltenham Festival Day 2 - Part 2

Here is our second of three guides to all the action on Wednesday at Cheltenham.

The RSA Chase is the third race of the afternoon (14:40) and is often known as the ’Novices Gold Cup’ in a race that marks out the leading young chaser of their generation. Boston Bob is the market leader though the horse also holds an entry for the opening race of the second day the John Oaksey National Hunt Chase. If he does run he will no doubt be a contender though you have to go back all the way to 2004 for a horse of the same age (eight) to win this race. The winner then though was also Willie Mullins trained Rule Supreme. In fact Mullins has a good record in this race training the winner three times since 1998.

The Paul Nicholls trained Unioniste is next in the market and the course and distance winner is a youngster who has a real promising future ahead. For me this race will have come too early and certainly I am not interested in the prices of around 4/1.

In both recent outings the Nicky Henderson trained Hadrian’s Approach has found one too good for him. At Newbury it was Unioniste who narrowly held him off while at Kempton it was Dynaste who has elected not to run here. At around 7/1 I expect this horse to be in the mix and with the stayers track of Cheltenham benefiting his style more he gets the nod here.

In addition I like the look of the Willie Mullins trained runner Terminal at big each-way prices. A winner at Navan and Cork on recent runs this certainly represents a step up in class but he was won over the distance and ticks most of the boxes in the key trends catagories.

The fourth race of the afternoon is the Queen Mother Champion Chase with the market headed by the very short priced Sprinter Sacre. Coral are offering a remarkable bet with a £20 maximum stake that has the horse at evens and this looks like printing money. Restrictions will apply on this market and the bet can only be placed online, mobile and telephone. Be sure if you can to take them up on this remarkable offer. The facts are ominous for anyone looking to take on the Nicky Henderson horse with seven chase starts leading to seven wins with an aggregate victory margin of just under 100 lengths which is just remarkable. The only thing that can beat this horse is the jumping with sometimes he travels so fast any slight error in the jumping might be hard to correct. At 2/7 I would not want to take a chance at Evens I can not recommend this better higher and this is my bet of the week at the Festival.

If the remarkable does happen and Sprinter Sacre does not win then who, perhaps the 2011 winner Sizing Europé and is available at around 5/1 at the time of writing. He could offer some appeal at around Evens in the betting without the favourite market. Others expected to go well in this race are Mail De Bievre, Wishfull Thinking and Sanctuarie.

Though in reality most will be just looking to get home second behind Sprinter Sacre who is a one-off special horse.
