Six Nations

After an exciting first weekend the Six Nations returns this weekend here is our guide to the best of the bets.

The weekend starts with a game between Scotland and Italy that some are dubbing the wooden spoon decider. However as Italy showed last weekend in beating France anything can happen in this Six Nations and it could be a very tightly packed table come the end of the season. Scotland are the 8/13 (general) favourites which is understandable as this is a must win game while Italy are terrible away from home normally. An Italy victory is 15/8 (sportingbet) while the point spread gives them between three and five points start (depending on the bookmaker).

If Italy are to do anything then you would think that the key man would be fly-half Luciano Orquera. Orquera was fantastic against France setting up two tries, as well as being immaculate with his boot including a drop goal. Odds of 12/1 (BetVictor) on him to be named man of the match look generous and this looks the way to play this tricky looking game.

The later game Saturday sees France take on Wales in a battle between the two sides who proved to be the biggest disappointment of the opening weekend. France will have been slaughtered in the press for their embarassing defeat to Italy while Wales were no shows in the opening half against Ireland. Bookmakers make France the 3/10 (general) favourites for victory here as they seek a reaction from their performance against Italy. Chances are they may get it though I will not be rushing to back them at that price. Wales at 106/29 (pinnacle) does not hugely appeal bearing in mind they have lost their last eight games.

The best here then might come in the tryscorer market where Wesley Fofana appeals at 17/2 (Skybet/Stan James) in the first tryscorer market or at 7/4 (ladbrokes) in the anytime try scorer market. Fofana is known as Le Guepard (The Cheetah) for his lightning quick speed and he will fancy his chances against a Welsh defence who let in three tries in the first-half against the Irish.

Is it too early in the second week to call a game a title decider? Maybe so, though the game between Ireland and England on Sunday is going to be a massive one. Bookmakers are struggling to split the pair with England evens (general) while the Irish are 21/20 (sportingbet) and the draw is 20/1 (general). Both sides emerged victorious last weekend with the Irish seeing off Wales while England saw off Scotland. While both looked impressive it is difficult to tell whether that is because these are impressive rugby teams or because the opposition were less than impressive. This then makes the game between these sides on Sunday difficult to call, not helped by the head to head record. Ireland have won seven of the last 12 against England though the last two have been won by England.

The best of the bets in this game comes in backing things to be tight at half-time as both sides will look to wear each other down. The way to do this is in backing the second half to be the highest scoring which can be had at 10/11 with bet365. The game is likely to open up as time goes on and defences get tired and start to make more mistakes.
