Strictly Come Dancing

Strictly Come Dancing is set to return this weekend as 14 couples take to the dancefloor to try and secure the support of the public and the judges, just who will be lifting the glitter ball trophy?

Denise Van Outen: Is an English actress, singer and television presenter. The 38 year-old is expected to go well as she has appeared in the West End in the musical Chicago which is a show that features a lot of dancing. The Essex girl will likely be the one to beat though at 7/2 (sportingbet) she seems a little too short for me.

Louis Smith: The Olympic gymnast is likely to be one of the best dancers. Sport stars tend to do well due to the footwork and co-ordination required. One word of caution though remember Strictly is about personality as much as dancing. It might be best to wait a few weeks to see how Smith comes off on camera, I suspect some people might find him a little too cocky for their liking. Smith is 7/2 (general) for victory.

Kimberley Walsh: The Girls Aloud star is another with a strong musical theatre background and no doubt can do well. Singers tend to do well, especially those coming from groups that had a dance element to their performance. Walsh also recently appeared in the Shrek musical and at 5/1 (general) is expected be among the final five.

Nicky Byrne: At 7/1 (general) the Westlife star is the one I would recommend. Byrne will have a strong fan base from his time in the band, he is a good looking guy who does a lot of work for charity. Women will fancy him or want to mother him, guys would be happy buying him a pint. The former Westlife man gets our early vote.

Victoria Pendleton: The former Olympic cyclist is 10/1 (Stan James/ladbrokes/william hill) though I can’t be getting involved at that price. I think female viewers will be turned off by her personality and steely nature.

Dani Harmer: My second selection is Dani Harmer who offers good each-way value at 14/1 (general). Harmer brings a strong fan base from her work on kids TV. Better still she can dance, Harmer partnered with Tyger-Drew Honey for Sports Relief and they finished runners-up with the best danced piece of the show.

Colin Salmon: At 20/1 (betfred) this James Bond actor seems priced about right, not one of the worst, but not one of the best.

Michael Vaughan: If Vaughan has a similar talent to Darren Gough and Mark Ramprakash (two former winners) then that 25/1 (betfred) will be a steal. I suspect though Vaughan may struggle.

Richard Arnold: betfred are not high on the chances of Arnold either. At 33/1 he does not seem a natural dancer and though a likeable enough guy he might be one of the early casualties.

Fern Britton: The biggest mistake the bookmakers have made is in the pricing of Britton. She is a likeable personality who could shock a few like Pamela Stevenson did a few years back. I think the 33/1 (Coral) offer with a 1/5 the top 3 looks great value. Those who want the straight win can get 40/1 (betfred) though she may find one or two slightly better.

The Others: I think Lisa Riley, Sid Owen, Johnny Ball and Jerry Hall are unlikely to go well. Keep an eye on the first elimination markets as likeable Johnny Ball might stay in a few weeks longer than expected, this could also be the case with Jerry Hall.
