Back Petterson, Toms and Teater in Wyndham Championship

Wyndham Championship

PGA Championship bronze medallist Carl Pettersson is the top pick for the Wyndham Championship, a tournament that he won in 2008 when it returned to the Sedgefield Country Club after more than 30 years away from the course.

Pettersson is the general third favourite at around 20-1 but even those odds look on the big side given his course form - first in 2008, tied for fourth in 2011 and one of the joint 18-hole record holders - and his performance in the fourth and final major championship of the 2012 golf season.

Ranked ninth in the FedExCup Points standings, Pettersson has won more than $3,000,000 on the PGA Tour this year, helped in so small part by one victory, two runner-up finishes and a total of five placings in the top 10.

In contention for most of the PGA Championship with which Rory McIlroy ended up running away, Petterson has the right blend of course and current form. He is one for the Wyndham Championship portfolio, as are David Toms and Josh Teater.

Toms is a Bermuda greens specialist who has played well at the Sedgefield Country Club in recent times and, also, has produced his best form of 2012 in the last couple of months.

The Bermuda note is relevant because the Sedgefield Country Club has switched to Bermuda from Bentgrass. Bermuda is an increasingly popular strain due to its sustainability during the summer but it is not as popular with most golfers since greens made from it can be difficult to read. Toms has a proven track record of putting well on Bermuda greens.

Toms has posted top-25 finishes on each of his last three appearances in Sedgefield Country Club-hosted tournaments, including a solo second in 2010, with an impressive scoring average during that period of 66.83 strokes per round.

And Toms has completed his last three PGA Tour events in ties for fourth, eighth and 42nd. So like Pettersson, he is in good form and likes the course on which the Wyndham Championship will be fought out. Back him at around 33-1.

Josh Teater is one of the hottest golfers on the PGA Tour right now having finished ninth in the True South Classic, joint fourth in the Canadian Open and, a fortnight ago, seventh in the Modified Stableford-run Reno-Tahoe Open.

Three consecutive top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour is no mean feat, irrespective of the quality of the tournaments, and Teater has played well in the Wyndham Championship before.

Ties for 18th and 25th in his two previous appearances in Sedgefield Country Club-hosted event is sufficient evidence to suggest that the North Carolina course is one that suits Teater`s game. Backing up that is the fact that his one and only Nationwide Tour title triumph occurred on a course set up by Donald Ross, designer of the Sedgefield Country Club.

First-time PGA Tour champions are commonplace in the Wyndham Championship so do not let Teater`s zero wins from 87 starts dissuade you from including him in your staking plan at what appear to be more than fair odds of around 50-1.

Back Pettersson, Toms and Teater and, if you split your stakes correctly, you will be getting just under 10-1 about one of them succeeding Webb Simpson as the title holder.

Other Wyndham Championship competitors to consider include 14-1 joint favourites Jason Dufner and Simpson, while Brandt Snedeker is worth a second look at around double those odds.
