Wyndham Championship

While every golfer would love to win a Major like Jason Duffner did last weekend the events at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro North Carolina are much more important to some. This is where they can secure themselves a place in the money making end of season Fed-Ex Cup play-offs and most importantly a Tour card for next year.

The venue for the Wyndham Championship is the Sedgefield County Club which has been the home of this event since 2008. Like Oak Hill this is a Donald Ross designed course that should suit accurate drivers with a great putting game. Bookmakers make Webb Simpson the 14/1 (GENERAL) favourite the event and the North Carolina native would be a popular winner in his home state. Simpson did win the event in 2011 and with 11 top 20s to his name this year will surely expected to be in the mix. The American was our tip in the USPGA and he followed a great second round of 64 with a poor round of 73. Three of his four rounds were over par and as such he looks a little too short in the betting.

Brandt Snedker is next in the betting at 16/1 (BWIN) after a win in the Canadian Open a few weeks back his form seems to have gone a little backwards and he was only tied 66th in the USPGA last weekend and others offer more appeal.

Bill Haas is a 20/1 (GENERAL) chance and he was a solid tied 25th in the PGA last week which continued a run of form that has seen one win, three top tens and top 25 from his last seven events. The American is one who has to be respected as is Sergio Garcia who in two previous visits to the course won here in 2012 and finished tied fourth in 2009. The Spaniard is 20/1 (GENERAL) though he has not finished higher than tied 21st in his last four events.

The headline selection has to be Zach Johnson who is in excellent form with top eight finishes from his last four events which includes a tied eighth in the US PGA Championships last weekend. Johnson has only played here once since 2008 and although a 26th place does not look too special he did finish with a 64 which showed he was getting the hang of the course. Better still that performance came when Johnson was badly out of form and this time around he looks in much better shape. He has a second at the Donald Ross designed East Lake to his name and ranks highly in key par four and putting stats. Johnson ticks all the boxes and with the pressure off in terms of FedEx Cup qualifcation he can play his game.

The pressure of a chance in the FedEx Cup can do funny things to golfers, to some it is a huge inspiration and one such player who could thrive on the pressure is Chad Campbell. The Texas native missed the USPGA last week through not qualifying which will have given him a week to prepare for this. He is currently just outside the top 125 and knows he needs to go well here. Campbell is another who likes Donald Ross designed courses having almost won the PGA at Oak Hill in 2013 and coming tied fourth here in 2012. He is in good form with a top ten and three top twenties from his last seven and appeals each-way at 80/1 (GENERAL).

The event has seen a number of shock winners such as Arjun Atwal (2010), Carl Pettersson (2009). Brent Geiberger (2004) and Trevor Dodds in 1998. Marc Wilson (no not the Stoke defender) could be another one for the list. Wilson went to college in North Carolina and knows the area and the course. He played here three times coming 9th on debut in 2008 and top 40 in 2009 and 2010. He fits all the key criteria coming fourth for driving accuracy and tenth for par four performance and at 100/1 (GENERAL) he looks good each-way value.

BEST OF THE BETS

GOLD: Zach Johnson, EW, 16/1 (GENERAL)
SILVER: Chad Campbell, EW, 80/1 (GENERAL)
BRONZE: Marc Wilson, EW, 100/1 (GENERAL)
