Manchester United will take their first tentative steps back onto the Champions League turf when they face reigning Eredivisie champions PSV in Eindhoven on Tuesday night.

Normal service resumed?

When Louis van Gaal leads his side out on Tuesday, there will surely be a sigh of relief amongst the Man United faithful. After dropping out of the top four under the guidance of David Moyes, there was a genuine fear that the club would struggle to make an instant return to Europe’s elite competition. Whether normal service has been fully resumed or not remains to be seen, but given the amount of money that has been invested in the club over the last two years, Louis van Gaal will certainly be under pressure to lead the team to the latter stages of the competition.

The star returns

The Dutch fans will feel no such joy at United’s return but instead will be keen on inflicting defeat on a team featuring their former star player Memphis Depay. The winger spent four years at the Boeren before making the switch to Manchester and can expect a mixed reception when he takes to the field on Tuesday.

In form PSV

After winning the league last season, Phillip Cocu’s team have made a positive start to their title defence and remain unbeaten on eleven points having played five league games so far. In their most recent game they defeated Cambuur by six goals to nil away from home and have yet to show any signs of missing Depay.

United boosted by Liverpool win

After looking fairly unconvincing in their first few games, United stepped up their game at the weekend to stroll past old adversaries Liverpool. And although their opponents looked decidedly out of sorts during that match, the Old Trafford club will be hoping that they can use that result as springboard for their European return.

They also had a good chance to warm up for the group stages when they faced Club Brugge in the qualifying round. They cruised past the Belgians over the two legs scoring seven goals in the process. This game will be a great test of both teams’ European credentials ahead of the new campaign.

Team news

Captain Wayne Rooney is out with a hamstring injury which could mean a start for youngster Anthony Martial who impressed against Liverpool on Saturday.
