Premier League preview and odds: Southampton vs Burnley

October 16, 2016 16:00pm - St. Mary’s Stadium

Premier League

Mid-table dwellers Southampton will look to extend their unbeaten home record on Sunday when they host a Burnley side still looking for their first point on the road.

Saints making steady progress

After a shaky start in which they picked up just two points from their opening four games, Southampton seem to have got their season back on track. New boss Claude Puel has guided his team to two wins and a draw in their last three games to lift them up to 10th in the Premier League table with seven games played.

The Saints have yet to be beaten on home soil, having won one and drawn two of their matches at St.Mary’s. In addition, they scored exactly one goal in each of those games. They come into this fixture on the back of a 0-0 draw away to reigning champions Leicester City.

Opponents Burnley are one of only three teams (West Ham United and Leicester City being the others) to have not won a single point away from home - although due to a fixture change they have only played two games away from Turf Moor. In addition, they also hold the distinction of being the only team yet to score on the road, having lost 3-0 in both their previous matches. The Clarets come into this game on the back of a narrow 0-1 defeat at home to Arsenal.

Team news

The home side will be without the injured quartet of Cedric Soares, Ryan Bertrand, Shane Long and Jeremy Pied.

Meanwhile, the visitors will have to cope without the services of the injured Ashley Barnes and the suspended Andre Gray.

Betting odds and tips

Five of Southampton`s seven matches this season have produced under 2.5 goals - a record matched by Burnley - but they have managed to chalk a goal in every home game.

Burnley have conceded three goals in both of their previous away matches but that number may be reduced against a low-scoring Saints side on Sunday. However, they have yet to bag a single goal away from home this term.

With all things considered, the Under 2.5 goals bet looks like the best bet for this game.
