Premier League preview and odds: Liverpool vs Manchester United

October 17, 2016 20:00pm - Anfield Stadium

Premier League

Liverpool will look to draw level on points with league leaders Manchester City and second-ranked Tottenham Hotspur on Monday night, when they face Manchester’s other Premier League title contenders in the derby clash at Anfield. Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho’s men know that a win would haul them back into contention after their recent slump.

Liverpool out to put pressure on rivals

After watching Manchester City and Tottenham draw at the weekend, Liverpool now have a great chance to go level on points with their rivals at the top of the Premier League table. However, in order to achieve their quest they must first beat one of their oldest and fiercest rivals.

Jurgen Klopp’s men come into this game in good shape, having won their last four games in a row. They have already played Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea away from home and took seven points from a possible nine in those games.

The Reds only defeat in their last 15 Premier league home matches came against Monday night’s opponents back in January (0-1). In the two games they have played at their redeveloped ground this season, they have scored nine goals and conceded two.

Manchester United have won just one of their last four Premier League matches and defeat on Monday would leave them six points adrift of the leaders with eight games played.

The Red Devils come into this match on the back of a 1-1 draw at home to struggling Stoke City. Prior to that they defeated reigning champions Leicester City 4-1, also on home soil. They have won the last five Premier League meetings with Liverpool but did lose to their rivals over two legs in the knockout stages of last year’s Europa League competition.

Team news

The home side have a few injury concerns with Georginio Wijnaldum, Adam Lallana, Sheyi Ojo and Joe Gomez all undergoing treatment. In the absence of Wijnaldum and Lallana, the Liverpool boss may decide to give Daniel Sturridge a chance up front with Emre Can slotting into midfield. Meanwhile, Phil Jones is the only major casualty for the visitors.
