With the Open starting this Thursday (July 19th) bookmakers have been busy pricing up a number of markets (eighty plus) and here is a look at some of the alternatives to simply just betting on the outright market.

Those looking for a quick play on the action on Thursday, while holding their main bets until they see how the course and players are shaping up, should consider the ’first round leader’ market. Clubhouse leaders after round one tend to be those who get out in the morning, this is because the course tends to be unblemished and the wind tends to be calmer. The afternoon tends to find the course changed by foot traffic with the putting greens becoming a lot more uneven over the day. Look for those players out on the course earlier and for those with the time of game suited to the course (as stated in the outright preview piece the total driving and greens in regulation stats are worth looking out for). Adam Scott at 8:42 (50/1-Skybet/ladbrokes/youwin) and Dustin Johnson 9:31 (60/1-youwin) both have nice morning draws and fulfil the criteria.

Bookmakers are priced up on top finisher in a number of areas, such as Top American, Top Amateur, Top Englishman, etc. These markets can be value as they can eliminate golfers you may worry about, or limit the fields. One such market is the ’Top Argentinian’ where just three players take part. Andres Romero is evens (boylesports/sportingbet) to see off Angel Cabrera and Rafael Echenique. Cabrera has missed three of the last four Open cuts and shot 80 and 75 on his last appearance at the course, he seems opposable. Echenique comes into the tournament with little form and no real history of doing well at Majors and looks one to swerve. This leave Romero who has a good record at links courses and is in solid form on the tour this year, solid should be enough to see him home in this market.

Top Australian market is headed by Adam Scott, who must be respected. Scott at 7/4 (paddy Power/Stan James/ladbrokes) can go well on a course that should play into his strengths. With some bookmakers offering each-way in these markets it might pay to side with John Senden at 7/1 (general). Senden is a solid golfer who is a having a good year on the Tour. Senden was fourth in the recent John Deere Classic, just one of four top ten finishes this season (including a tied tenth at the US Open). Senden should be able to see off Geoff Ogilvy (6/1-Stan James) and Aaron Baddeley (9/1-Stan James). Both men have a poor record in the Open Championship.

Another market on offer is the ’winning margin’ which gives you a bet that is certain to last until the very last hole. You can get 9/2 (youwin) that the winning margin is by four strokes or more, if you think it will be a closer affair with a playoff 14/5 (188bet) and to be settled by one stroke 11/4 (general). Those who are interested can play the ’hole-in-one’ market with Skybet going 10/11 that one will happen and bookmakers offering evens (general) that it will not happen.

With over 80 markets available you will surely find something to interest you as you enjoy the quality action on show at The Open.
