Southampton v Manchester United - Match preview and odds

16:00pm - St Mary’s Stadium

Premier League

Manchester United are already playing catch-up in the league and could travel to Southampton with an eight point deficit on the leaders if Manchester City beat West Ham at home.

Saints stuck in the blocks

Ronald Koeman`s team have so far failed to build on last year’s impressive campaign and will be hoping that a positive result against United could finally kick-start their season. The Saints have just a single win to their name this season but they remain suspended in mid-table obscurity thanks to three drawn games. The Dutch Coach will keen to dispel the suggestion that he is suffering from second season syndrome.

United in adversity

It has been a week of mixed fortunes for the Manchester team: last weekend they were buoyed by a win against rivals Liverpool, then, in midweek, they were left distraught after suffering defeat in the Champions League and losing Luke Shaw to a double leg break. The loss of the in-form left-back will be a massive blow for the 20-time league champions.

Team news

Wayne Rooney could return for United after missing the last two games through injury while Daley Blind may be called upon to slot in at left-back in place of the injured Shaw. If the United captain does return, new signing Anthony Martial could be the one to make way.

For the South Coast team, Sadio Mane may return to the fold but Jordy Clasie and Ryan Bertrand are both still missing through injury.

Betting odds and tips

With the exception of the convincing win against a brittle-looking Liverpool team, United have not been entirely convincing in the league this season. Despite this, they have somehow managed to stumble their way to third place in the table. There was a time under a certain former manager when this habit may have been described as “the sign of champions” but under Louis van Gaal, that badge has yet to be earned.

Since losing at home to Everton, the Saints have gone three games unbeaten and secured their first win at home to Norwich. They have yet to achieve the performance levels of last season and they will be hoping to regain some of that spark on Sunday.

The bookies have the away team as favourites but there is not much in it and the draw looks like a decent bet at 23/10 with bet365. The 6/1 on offer from Betvictor for a 1-1 stalemate also looks tempting.
