Just the other weekend I was watching the classic movie trilogy The Godfather with my girlfriend who had criminally (pun intended) never seen any of them. In the less memorable third movie one of the characters says the line ’Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in again.’ I feel a little similar in League One this season. After getting on Bournemouth on decent odds to be promoted when Eddie Howe returned I was delighted to watch them embark on a huge run of form. Then it ended as suddenly as it started and I watched them embark on a five game losing streak that made me doubt they would even make the play-offs. Six straight wins later and they are suddenly just one point behind Donaster at the top of the table. Confidence is high and I am amazed to find them available at 21/20 (Coral) to see off Shrewsbury this weekend. The Shrews have lost three of their last five games at home and although these defeats came against high-flying sides it does suggest that they can be beaten. In addition Brett Pitman must be backed at 5/4 (paddy Power) in the anytime scorer market. The player has netted in seven of his last eight games and in each of the last six.

The big story in League One this week was the exit of Danny Wilson from Sheffield United with just five games to go as Chris Morgan steps into the role. The Blades take on Swindon this weekend and will need to get some form together as they look to end a home run of form in 2013 that has seen them win just one of seven games. Opponents Swindon are not in much better shape themselves having taken just two points from their last four games and this looks a game to avoid from a betting point of view.

Often in betting it is not so much a case of finding a side you want to side with as finding a side you are keen to take on and one such team I am keen to oppose is Coventry. The Sky Blues decided this week not to appeal their ten point reduction which has ended their hopes of the play-offs and left them stuck in mid-table for the season. As a player how do you pick yourself up from that mental blow it must be very hard and I can not blame anyone who is already mentally on their summer holiday. Their opponents this Saturday are a Crawley side who are seven points from the play-offs and with teams above them losing will not have given up hope of making the top six. Richie Barker is the kind of manager who will have his players playing to the last and a morale boosting win at Sheff United this week will mean that confidence is high among the ranks. Take them at 7/5 (general) to secure all three points.

The third bet I like in the league is Walsall to get all three points from their visit to Scunthorpe. Firstly the recent record between these sides show that Scunthorpe have just one victory in their last nine against Walsall. In addition only Doncaster and Brentford (19) have picked up more points over the last ten games in League One than the Saddlers (18). On the same level no team has secured fewer points over these games than the Irons (6). True Walsall draw a few (four of their last five) however at odds of 8/5 (BetVictor/Coral/william hill) this is a bet worth taking.

BEST OF THE BETS

GOLD: Bournemouth to beat Shrewsbury, 21/20 (Coral)
SILVER: Crawley to beat Coventry, 7/5 (general)
BRONZE: Walsall to beat Scunthorpe, 8/5 (BetVictor/Coral/william hill)
