Red Bull are looking strong and Sebastian Vettel will be hoping to be the first to cross the line in Germany, can he claim his first ever home Grand Prix victory?

Bookmakers make Sebastian Vettel the 11/4 (general) favourite to reach the chequered flag first in Hockenheim. Vettel, despite being behind in the standings, will enter the race full of confidence with the way the car is coming together. After a disappointing qualifying campaign at Silverstone he produced some very fast laps in the race. The circuit should suit Vettel with a complex mix of long straights and slow corners creating a track that the drivers enjoy racing on. With the forecast for Sunday predicting dry and mainly sunny weather the race should be about the better car, which the Red Bull is.

Fernando Alonso is next in the betting at 9/2 (general) and the Spaniard won the last time the race was held at the Hockenheim venue (2010). Andreas Stella, Ferrari Race Engineer, is confident that car will do well “The Car was good in Valencia and it was also good in Silverstone. Hockenheim is a mix of the slow speed of Valencia and high speed of Silverstone. I would expect Ferrari to be competitive in Germany” he told the team website. Felippe Massa in the other Ferrari might offer each-way value at 33/1 (general).

No such confidence exists though with the McLaren car, meaning Lewis Hamilton at 6/1 (Bodog) looks hard to back. Hamilton won this race in 2011 (though it was held at a different track) and will hope that McLaren have found ways to rectify the problems that plagued them at Silverstone. McLaren have made the right noises about improvements to the car, but until we see the result on the track then Hamilton does not look an attractive betting option. An even less attractive betting option is his teammate Jenson Button at 20/1(sportingbet/Bodog).

Mark Webber in the other Red Bull is 13/2 (sportingbet/william hill) and looks another strong contender on the back of his win at Silverstone. The best way to take advantage of the Red Bull dominance is to take up Bwin on their 11/4 offer for both Red Bull cars to finish on the podium. Michael Schumacher has had a tough time of things since his return, but he has picked up in his last two races, finishing seventh at Silverstone and third in the European Grand Prix. Schumacher knows the German track well and quotes of 13/8 (Skybet) on him to finish in the top six seem worth a small stake.

The Lotus car produced some great lap times at Silverstone if Grosjean and Raikkonen can get their qualifying worked they could be a real challenge to Red Bull and Ferrari. Kimi Raikkonen is 12/1 (general) to win the race and 11/4 (Coral) for a podium finish. His team-mate Romain Grosjean will suffer a five place penalty following a gearbox change in the British Grand Prix. This will probably rule him out of running, but look for him in the fastest lap market at 8/1 (general) as he uses his speed to try make up places.

Those looking for a speculative punt could do worse than taking the 40/1 (ladbrokes/william hill) on one of the Saubers to finish in Pole Position. Perez and Kobayashi produced some fast time in the early qualifying sessions at Silverstone and if the forecasted rain for Saturday comes then we could get a real run for our money.

It promises to be another fascinating weekend in what has been a fascinating 2012 Formula One season.
